Job Duties
- Develop and plan work schedules, assigns daily tasks, and monitor work performed to ensure safe, efficient and timely completion of projects.
- Inspect and document performance of contractors to ensure contract compliance.
- Review road conditions to determine repair needs and ensures work is completed.
- Promote, demonstrate and maintain compliance with all safety requirements including work zone traffic controls and set-up.
- Conduct on-the-job training and recommend training needs to Superintendent.
- Manage employee performance by communicating expectations, feedback, and performance appraisals.
- Complete daily work reports.
- Assist with inventory management and back up Inventory Manager as needed.
- Perform maintenance activities that require a license or certification.
- Operate equipment and perform manual labor.
- Serve as a shift supervisor during emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience in roadway maintenance and, or construction activities. Experience leading or supervising work crews.
- Valid driver's license.
- Skilled in the use of computers and software applications.
- Ability to perform manual labor.
- Ability to direct, evaluate and train others.
- Safety shoes required.
- Skilled in operating and maintaining light to heavy trucks and equipment.
- Considerable knowledge of roadway maintenance and construction practices and procedures.
- Ability to obtain valid CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
- Knowledge of inventory practices and procedures.
Additional Considerations
- DCR Erosion and Sediment Control certification.
- Experience supervising others and evaluating performance.
- Experience planning schedules and assigning manpower.
- Ability to gather data, conduct research and create reports.
- Experience overseeing emergency operations activities including snow removal, storm damage, and accident clean-up.
- Inventory management experience.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course.
