Job Duties
- respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
- attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
- demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
- participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
- complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.
Positions available at the New Kent and Mechanicsville Area Headquarters. Additional positions may be filled from this recruitment within 90 days of the closing date at this and other locations within the Ashland Residency.
VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.
Starting June 1, 2022, in addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. A 12-month tenure agreement is required.

Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
- Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
- Safety shoes required.
Additional Considerations
- Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident clean-up.
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor equipment repairs.
- A combination of training, experience, or education in Maintenance, Vehicle Operations or related field desired.
- Experience in roadway maintenance and construction.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License with appropriate endorsements.

NOTE: All drivers hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. Effective February 7, 2022, new Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL from a Class A to a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training.
