Job Duties

Then consider working for the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Richmond District, Chesterfield Residency. The Chesterfield Specialty Crew is seeking an Operator Sign to install, maintain, repair and remove roadway signs and traffic control devices for assigned area(s). You will perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance.

As an Operator Sign, you will:
  • respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions
  • attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control
  • demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely
  • participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, concrete pipe replacement, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects
  • complete pre-trip inspections, perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.

VDOT is an emergency response agency, and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

Starting June 1, 2022, in addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. A 12-month tenure agreement is required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Skill in mathematics used in carpentry and calculating distance.
  • Experience in work zone set-up, traffic controls and flagging to include using the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) or similar regulations.
  • Ability to maintain records and complete simple paperwork.
  • Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium and heavy-duty equipment used in routine and emergency maintenance operations.
  • Skill in general carpentry.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
  • Valid driver's license.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience in roadway sign installation, maintenance and repair
  • Certifications in Basic and Intermediate Work Zone Safety, Flagging, First Aid, CPR and Chainsaw Safety
  • Inventory experience
  • Experience maintaining records
  • Experience in emergency operations to include snow removal, storms and accident response and clean-up
  • Basic Tree Cutting & Chainsaw Operator
  • Valid CDL

Special Instructions

If selected as a finalist, you will perform a skills demonstration; undergo references and verification of work history, DMV Records Check, Pre-employment physical and drug screen, and fingerprint-based criminal history records check. This position also requires approved safety shoes as a reimbursable expense. Applicants must be eligible to work in the United States. H1B VISA Sponsorship is not available. Position is designated as essential to emergency operations and will be required to work outside normal work hours to ensure the safety of the traveling public. Additional positions may be filled from this applicant pool within the next 90 days.

NOTE: Employees hired without a valid CDL in hand are required to obtain their CDL within 11 months of their hire date. You cannot operate commercial motor vehicles prior to receiving the necessary licensure and medical certification. New Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations require entry-level drivers (drivers who are seeking to take the skills test in order to obtain a CDL for the first time, upgrade their CDL to a Class A from a Class B, or take the knowledge test to obtain a hazardous materials endorsement for the first time) to complete FMCSA- approved Entry-Level Driving (ELD) Training before the Department of Motor Vehicles can grant the requested CDL or endorsement. The course is comprised of 160 hours, on average, of training. VDOT is willing to assist with your enrollment in and payment for the course upon your acceptance of an ELD Training Tuition tenure and repayment agreement.

VDOT is an emergency response agency. This position is essential requiring you to work in emergencies, to include weekends, holidays, and after normal business hours; assignments may vary based on business needs to include working in severe weather.
