Are you looking for an opportunity to implement processes and procedures to keep the state of Virginia safe? We are searching for individuals driven by safety to support state traffic operations.
VDOT’s Richmond District is seeking an Operator Traffic to perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance. Perform emergency roadway operations as an essential employee. This position will properly install and maintain longitudinal pavement markings, pavement messages and other traffic control devices.

Starting June 1, 2022, in addition to a comprehensive compensation and benefits package, a $3,000 sign-on bonus is available for qualified candidates. A 12-month tenure agreement is required.

Minimum Qualifications
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of specialty equipment and complex machinery used in installation/repair of signs.
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding traffic control devices.
- Experience performing heavy manual labor
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, read and interpret work plans and specifications, and complete accurate work documentation.
- Skill in the use and maintenance of hand and power tools, as well as light, medium and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
- Safety shoes required.
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and sketches.
- Working knowledge of work zone traffic control standards and techniques.
Additional Considerations
- Experience in pavement markings and messaging operations.
- Experience and knowledge of roadway signs.
- Experience in emergency operations to include snow and ice removal, storms and debris clean-up.
- Experience in the installation and maintenance of various types or traffic control devices.
- Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements
- Basic Tree cutting and chainsaw operator
- Basic work zone traffic control safety training.
- CPR with AED, standard first Aid, and Blood borne Pathogens (BBP) Combined course
- Flagger certification
