VDOT's Culpeper District is seeking a Maintenance Supervisor for the Yancey Mills Area Headquarters. As a Maintenance Supervisor, you will use our foundational drivers to play a crucial role in shaping the highways that connect communities and drive progress across the Commonwealth of Virginia.
We are seeking a dynamic Maintenance Supervisor, and in this position, you will:
Supervise crews performing daily roadway maintenance operations.
Assess, plan, and schedule roadway maintenance, including estimating materials, labor, and costs.
Order supplies and monitor expenditures.
Evaluate staff, develop individualized on-the-job training, and give feedback for continued growth.
Safety is our number one focus. You are encouraged to identify workplace safety hazards and make recommendations for improvements.
Lead safety meetings, train staff on safety, ensure work zones and traffic control align with agency standards and guidelines.
Respond to customer inquiries and identify solutions.
Maintain daily work accomplishment records.
Coordinate, direct, and respond to emergencies blocking roads, such as traffic accidents, and debris. You will provide or oversee traffic control while performing operations to reopen the road in a timely fashion. You will supervise severe weather responses for snow, ice, and other types of hazardous weather conditions. Severe weather shifts are typically 12 hours and may include working weekends, holidays, and after-hours. This position is required to work during emergencies.
Serve as a working supervisor by operating equipment, and performing manual labor as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
- Knowledge of roadway maintenance, materials, methods, and procedures.
- Experience supervising, training, documenting work efforts, and evaluating staff.
- Experience planning work schedules.
- Experience identifying and assigning manpower, materials, and equipment needed for jobs.
- Ability to or experience in reading and interpreting road and bridge plans and sketches.
- Knowledge of general inventory practices.
- Knowledge of workplace safety.
- Experience completing administrative paperwork and reports.
- Possesses basic computer skills.
- Skilled in the operation and maintenance of equipment used in roadway maintenance and repair.
- Experience performing manual labor.
- Must have valid Commerical Driver's License.
Additional Considerations
- Experience leading emergency operations such as snow removal, storm damage, and accident clean-up.
- Experience using computers to maintain inventory and financial records.

VDOT utilizes a market-based pay program, which has been approved by DHRM. Therefore, advertised rates of pay may or may not align with the Commonwealth pay bands.
Position requires unrestricted mobility, working in all types of weather, and terrain, and standing for long periods. Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds. Requires approved safety shoes, which is a reimbursable expense.
