About the Role:
As a Traffic Operator, you will perform a combination of skilled equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor tasks in roadway maintenance. Your essential work ensures smooth and safe operations, even in emergency situations, all while playing a vital role in Virginia’s emergency response operations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Pavement Marking Installation and Maintenance: Install and maintain pavement markings and messages in compliance with federal and state guidelines.
- Sign Installation and Maintenance: Install and maintain traffic signs, ensuring compliance with MUTCD standards.
- Traffic Control: Set up, maintain, and remove traffic control devices for work zones, detours, and lane closures.
- Manual Labor: Participate as a key member of the crew, performing manual tasks and operating tools to complete projects.
- Equipment Operations: Operate a variety of vehicles and equipment, including light to heavy-duty highway equipment, ensuring safety and efficiency.
- Preventative Maintenance: Conduct inspections, maintenance, and repairs to ensure all equipment is in top condition.
- Emergency Operations: Prepare and operate equipment during snow and ice removal, accident cleanups, and other emergency roadway operations.
- Safety First: Be proactive in demonstrating and advocating for safety practices, following all safety guidelines and regulations to maintain a safe working environment.
Minimum Qualifications
- Skill in the operation and maintenance of specialty equipment and complex machinery used in pavement marking and messaging.
- Knowledge of federal and state regulations regarding traffic control devices.
- Experience performing heavy manual labor.
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions, read and interpret work plans and
- Skill in the use and maintenance of hand and power tools, as well as light, medium, and
- Safety shoes required.
- Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
- Ability to read and interpret plans and sketches.
- Working knowledge of work zone traffic control standards and techniques.
Additional Considerations
- Experience in pavement marking and messaging operations.
- Experience in emergency operations to include snow and ice removal, storms and debris
- Experience in the installation and maintenance of various types of traffic control devices.
- Valid CDL with appropriate endorsements
