What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Mechanic position at VA Hospital Laundry, Inc?
Summary: Maintenance mechanics will work independently and with other plant personnel to perform preventative, predictive, and routine maintenance tasks. They will perform start-up and shut-down procedures, troubleshoot mechanical and electrical issues, repair failures of production and facilities equipment, and ensure maximum equipment efficiency and effectiveness. All tasks will be performed while supporting the policies, goals and objectives of VHL.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Repair and maintain production equipment such as large industrial washers, dryers, feeders and folders.
- Repair and maintain facility equipment such as boilers, compressors, heat exchanger and lighting.
- Repair or replace control devices such as switches, photo eyes, proximity sensors, pushbuttons, contactors, motor starters, etc. as needed.
- Answer and resolve daily maintenance requests in a timely fashion, so that minimal down-time is experienced.
- Work with all plant personnel in a cooperative and professional manner.
- Strictly adhere to all safety rules, policies and procedures required by VHL, law, and also recognized as common practice in the industry.
- Remain current on equipment and repair procedures.
- Keep accurate and timely records of maintenance performed.
- Follow written and verbal instructions and perform other tasks as directed by supervision.
Additional Functions:
- Drive and pick up parts, transport parts, etc.
- May work with and support other plant personnel as required by supervision.
Schedule:
- Must be willing to work a changing shift and on a rotating weekend schedule.
Qualifications:
- Have and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Minimum of three years industrial maintenance experience with specific knowledge of mechanical, electrical, electronics, plumbing, hydraulics, pneumatics, welder and/or boiler applications.
- Proficiency in the proper use of power and hand tools.
- Strong electrical troubleshooting ability of 3 phases 240/480 volt systems preferred
- PLC troubleshooting and programming experience preferred
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English, ability to comprehend and follow direction performs, basic math, good time management skills and be a team player.
- Must pass criminal background and drug screening
- For current employees placed during the bid process:
- Must have a good attendance record with less than 20 points
- Must have a good compliance record with no more than 1 conduct warning
- Must meet all other requirements to bid listed in the collective bargaining agreement
Education:
- High School graduation with 3 years of similar experience required
Essential Job Functions:
- Must be able to stand for the entire shift which is a minimum of 8 hours per day
- Between 95-98% of this time may be spent stooping, climbing, walking, bending, pushing, and/or pulling
- Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds
- Must be able to climb ladders in excess of 20 feet
- Must be capable of regular attendance
- Must be capable of rotating shifts and working on Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays as needed
- Must be able to read, write, and speak English
Working Environment:
Inside and outside areas of a typical industrial laundry facility, which includes working with and around large machinery, variations in temperature, sound, odors, humidity, lint and dust, in general offices or on outside grounds. Work environment is not climate controlled and could require working in extreme temperatures.
