Research Veterinarian / Academic Attending Veterinarian, VA Portland Heath Care System, Portland, OR
VA Portland Health Care System in Portland, Oregon, is seeking a full-time Attending Veterinarian / Veterinary Medical Officer (VMO) at the GS-14 level. The VMO will hold a DVM or VMD degree. Diplomate of ACLAM is preferred. This individual will succeed our retiring VMO who has overseen the station’s animal program with care and compassion and with enthusiasm for the VA’s Research mission.
The projected salary range is expected to be approximately $134,000 – 156,000, depending upon experience and qualifications.
VA Portland is the 6th largest VA research station in the nation, with direct-cost funding over $42 million annually. The VMO oversees a robust and vibrant animal research program focused on rodent models of disease. Research facilities at VA Portland are clean and modern, span four buildings, and include three separate veterinary medical units in close proximity.
The VMO and animal-care staff work closely with investigators and their research teams in providing oversight and technical advice/support related to experimental procedures. The VMO directly supervises the Lead Technician and the VMU Supervisor. The VMO is active in the station’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Subcommittee. The VMO is expected to be proactive in interfacing with VA’s Office of the Chief VMO and with third-party regulatory entities, and to have a sound understanding of the budgeting and expenditure of federal funds.
VA Portland is located in an attractive region of the city, just blocks from downtown, with sweeping views of the Willamette River and Mt. Hood. VA Portland is connected to the campus of the primary academic affiliate, Oregon Health & Science University, via a walkable 600-foot climate-controlled skybridge. Virtually all investigators at VA Portland hold an academic appointment at the affiliate.
