Job Title: Medical Assistant

Classification: Salary

Reports to: Office Manager or Medical Provider (Situational)

Summary/Objective: The Medical Assistant is an essential member of the health care team who is responsible for the care of surgical patients. The Office Assistant is essential in the facilitation of administrative tasks for day-to-day function of the surgery center operations. The Office Assistant and MA will work collaboratively with the medical staff to provide safe, knowledgeable, compassionate, educative, individualized and goal-directed care to patients and their families in the Surgery Center.

Essential Functions

Administrative Responsibilities

o Prepare patient charts, ensuring all medical clearance documentation is complete.

o Confirm surgical appointments by calling patients with arrival time and instructions.

o Manage surgical timesheet invoicing and case log input.

o Coordinate staff lunch orders and field incoming calls.

o Communicate equipment malfunctions to management.

o Take inventory stock when the materials coordinator is out/unavailable.

o Audit pathology charts for completion.

Clinical Responsibilities

o Assist in patient admission: escort patients, verify identity, place name and allergy bands, take vitals, and assist with ambulation and undressing

o Conduct point-of-care tests, including urine pregnancy and nicotine tests for preoperative clearance.

o Support IV placement and patient consent processes as needed.

o Assist in PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit) with patient monitoring, discharge instructions, and dressing/ambulation.

o Act as a patient advocate, ensuring their safety and comfort.

o Apply universal precautions during patient care.

Cleaning and Maintenance

Maintain a clean working environment:

o Front desk, Pre-Op, PACU, and breakroom.

o Assist in surgical instrument decontamination and sterilization.

o Handle biohazardous waste and participate in routine cleaning tasks.

Monitor and log fluid, blanket warmer, and medication refrigerator temperatures.

Skills/Competencies:

  • Excellent communication skills: Able to convey medical information to patients in a way that they understand and ensure that all information is transmitted with a high degree of accuracy. Able to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative team environment
  • Excellent listener: listening carefully to instructions and requests from physicians and to the concerns and needs of patients.
  • Compassionate/Empathetic: Display comfort and support to patients; Non-judgmental of patients or staff
  • Adaptable: Organization is vital, the ability to multi-task is a must, and adaptability is essential as day-to-day task vary
  • Stress Tolerance: Must be able to handle everyday stressors.
  • Integrity: Handling privileged information, ensuring confidentiality, and respecting patients' privacy. Understanding and adhering to the HIPAA Privacy Rule. Must employ a high degree of integrity when dealing with sensitive situations and documents.
  • Proficient office and computer skills: Ability to quickly learn/ operate office equipment, multi-line phones and EMR system.

Supervisory Responsibilities: None

Work Environment

  • Well-lighted, clean environment
  • Work involves:

o Exposure to cold office temperatures and unpleasant odors

o Exposure to potentially dangerous biological materials and situations that require following extensive safety precautions and may include the use of protective equipment

  • Will require OSHA training

Physical Demands

The Ability to:

  • Exert up to 50 lbs. of force occasionally
  • And/or up to 20 lbs. of force frequently
  • And/or up to 10 lbs. of force constantly

o to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body

  • Must be able to observe safe practice criteria in assisting patients.
  • Must be able to safely support the full weight of a patient when necessary

Vision Requirements Include:

  • Close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, and peripheral vision

Position type and expected hours of work:

  • Full Time - Salary
  • Weekdays
  • Afternoon Shift: 12pm-7:30pm (can range anywhere from 2pm-8pm with 8-hour guarantee based on surgical schedule and responsibility completion)

Travel: None

Required education and experience:

  • 2 years’ experience as a medical assistant
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification

Preferred education and experience:

  • 4-year degree with a focus on biology, chemistry or general science
  • 2 years’ experience in busy dermatology or plastic surgery office
  • State specific or national Phlebotomy certification
  • State specific IV certification
  • Formal education in medical assisting in the form of a certificate, diploma, or associate degree
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) through the American Association of Medical Assistants.
