Job description
Vagabond Cruise is Hilton Head Islands largest sightseeing and excursion cruise operator. Every year we carry over fifty thousand passengers on over two thousand excursions aboard four unique passenger vessels. We run with a tight well trained crew who handle everything from maintaining the vessels, to taking of the passengers, and generating revenue from on board sales. Ideal candidates will make an excellent professional appearance, be well spoken in English, have the ability to interact with passengers and work together a crew member.
Deckhands at Vagabond Cruise do it all. In season in the mornings they wash the boats stock retail and concession products and get ready for our cruises. During our cruises they handle lines, tying and untying the boats as we get underway. While underway they assist the Captains in maintaining a proper deck watch and also assist in the sale of retail and concession merchandise. At the end of the day they clean up the vessels, empty trash, and put them to bed for the night. Boat days are generally long days spent outside in the elements. In the off season we spend a lot of our time doing vessel maintenance, including chipping and painting the vessels, stripping, staining and painting wood trim, cleaning bilges, overhauling mechanical systems, etc. This is a physical, outdoor position that requires strength and stamina.
Must be a United States Citizen, at least twenty-one years of age and posses a valid drivers license to be eligible to serve as a deckhand or mate.
Purpose Of The Position:
To serve as deck crew aboard our passenger vessels insuring a safe and enjoyable experience of our passengers and be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of Company vessels and equipment.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Work with the Captain and Mate to insure the safe operation of the vessel.
- Create an atmosphere in which excellent passenger service is the highest priority.
- Maintain a professional appearance and bearing at all times while on watch.
- Maintain the vessels in a high state of cleanliness and appearance.
Other Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform daily cleaning of the vessel you are assigned.
- Operate the retail and concession outlets aboard the vessel.
- Follow opening, closing, and inventory procedures.
- Assist the Captain and Mate in getting the vessel underway and secured to the dock as well as boarding and disembarking passengers.
- Perform regular routine maintenance as directed by the Captain, Mate, or MOM.
Collaborative Responsibilities:
- Work with the Captain and Mate to enhance vessel safety and security.
- Work with the Captain and Mate to enhance the service to and enjoyment of our passengers.
Fiscal Responsibilities:
- Utilize Company assets and resources in a manner that minimizes expenses and maximizes profits.
- Accurately account for cash and inventory at retail outlets aboard the vessels per Company procedures.
Reporting Responsibilities:
- Reports to the vessel Captain.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Must pass and pre-employment drug screen and consent to participate in the Vagabond Cruise random drug screening program.
- Within thirty days of employment must obtain a certification in Red Cross CPR/First Aid.
Working Conditions and Environment:
- Aboard the P/V “Vagabond”, P/V “Spirit of Harbour Town”, S/Y “Stars & Stripes”, and M/L “Mystique”. These are underway positions requiring physical agility, strength, and the ability to work outside, on deck, in the elements regardless of the weather.
- Must be able to lift and forty-five pounds for certain distances and up and down stairs.
Job Type: Full-time
- Starting pay for this position is $16.00 per hour.
- Additional compensation from sales commissions and gratuities.
- After four months of service full time employees are eligible to participate in the Companies group health insurance plan. Full time is defined as an employee who works at least thirty-eight hours per week, and at least fifty weeks per year.
- After four months of service full time employees are eligible to participate in the Companies 401k Retirement Savings plan. Full time is defined as an employee who works at least thirty-eight hours per week, and at least fifty weeks per year.
- Accrue 100 GT Inland Sea Time
- Membership in USCG DOT Random Drug Testing Program
- Once you have accrued 720 days of qualified sea service with Vagabond Cruise we will pay for you to take a study course such a sea school to prepare you to take your 100GT Motor/Aux Sail Masters license. Certain conditions apply.
