Valence College Prep, a 5th-8th grade charter school in Queens, seeks a dedicated Eighth Grade Academic Dean. Valence College Prep opened in Fall of 2019 with 112 fifth graders and reached full enrollment in the Fall of 2022 with 448 scholars. We continue to build our team of passionate, adaptive, and detail-oriented educators united behind our mission - to equip each of our students with the academic skills, professional habits, and strength of character to graduate from college.
Job Summary
As a school, our first core belief is that excellent instruction yields strong academic performance. Our teachers have the most important job in our school, and we believe that great teachers are made, not born. The Academic Dean is the leader of their grade level team of teachers and takes responsibility for the progress of scholars in the grade level. They make it their purpose for all teachers in their grade level to have excellent curricular materials, assessments, coaching, and feedback to drive strong results for our scholars. The Academic Dean will report to and work in partnership with the Principal to lead weekly collaboration, coaching, and professional development in their role as a leader at Valence.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and coach all teachers on the eighth grade team to classroom success
- Develop and oversee the curriculum for academic courses across the eighth grade, in alignment to New York State standards and designed for scholar mastery of these standards
- Develop and oversee the delivery of all assessments, including skill assessments and course interim assessments, in partnership with other leaders, administrators, and teachers
- Provide coaching and feedback to staff members on curricular implementation and instruction
- Develop and deliver professional development for staff to master key instructional strategies
- Support and collaborate on intervention programs to provide scholars supports that provide them differentiated instruction to thrive
- Lead staff, scholars, and families in a variety of programs to increase scholar success
- Step in as a leader on any and all ad hoc tasks, projects, and areas of responsibility assigned in order to support and build a strong school environment
Key Competencies & Qualifications
- Unwavering high expectations for all scholars and a belief that all children deserve access to a college education
- Minimum three years of teaching experience required with demonstrated results for students
- Experience in leadership or teacher leadership in a high expectations environment
- Ability to provide positive but demanding feedback to drive staff toward instructional excellence
- Ability to lead a class or assembly where excellence is expected and cultivated in 100% of scholars
- Strong communication, organization, and on-the-fly problem solving skills
- Capacity and passion to grow every day based on data and feedback from coach and peers
- Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
- New York State teacher license/certification preferred, Special Education certification preferred
- Proficiency in technological tools, including Google Sheets, Slides, Drive (or equivalents)

Pay: $100,000.00 - $125,000.00 per year
