Public Safety Telecommunicators I are first responders that start out their 911 telecommunicator careers by answering emergency and non-emergency calls and collecting and recording information into our computer system for our telecommunicators to utilize in dispatching emergency and non-emergency assistance by Valencia County's law enforcement, fire, and medical partners and providing critical information to callers to respond to their emergency and non-emergency needs. During your first six months, you'll receive all of the training and practice you need to continue your career in becoming a 911 telecommunicator.

Summary:
Under the direction of shift supervisors, public safety telecommunicator I answer incoming 9-1-1 and admin calls and transmit information to telecommunicators for dispatch of appropriate units and resources to police, fire, emergency medical service, and other required personnel for allied agencies within Valencia County and provide accurate recording of information on a variety of forms, logs, and computer screens.

- Answer incoming emergency and non-emergency calls using a multi-line phone system.
- Perform as an emergency medical services first responder and provide initial instructions on emergency aid over the phone.
- Screen, evaluate, provide assistance, coordinate, and disseminate critical information via specialized computer and communication systems, and/or refer calls to the appropriate person/department.
- Perform multiple activities simultaneously by responding to communications and events while maintaining precision, accuracy, and swift response times.
- Work in a team setting while receiving training and coaching from various sources.
- Complete technical tasks related to the assigned area of responsibility.
- Execute tasks in compliance with all local, state, federal, and industry standards and regulations.
Supervisory Authority:
This position is a non-supervisory position.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Knowledge of principles and procedures of recordkeeping.
- Skill in effective decision making/problem solving based on a limited amount of information in crisis or emergency situations.
- Knowledge of basic computer systems and modern office equipment.
- Knowledge of methods and techniques used to search computer databases and obtain information.
- Ability to read a city map.

Minimum Qualifications:
Must pass a national fingerprint-based criminal history record check with no criminal convictions every 5 years of employment.
Must possess or obtain a valid New Mexico driver’s license.
Must be physically and mentally capable of handling duties including passing a hearing test with or without reasonable accommodation.
Must be able to work holidays, weekends, irregular hours, and shift work may be required with a possible extension of shift hours, at times with short notice.
Must pass CritiCall computer-based assessment.
Must complete Emergency Medical Dispatch training (EMD).
Must possess or be able to possess within three months of hire a New Mexico Department of Health Emergency Medical Dispatcher license.
Must complete New Mexico Telecommunicator Academy within one year or possess a New Mexico Department of Public Safety Telecommunicator Certification.
Must complete Advanced Training for Continuing Education required by N.M. Stat. § 29-7C-1 [29-7C-1 through 29-7C-9].
