General Description:

The purpose of this position is to perform research and/or development, in collaboration with other Valent scientists, of next generation sustainable agricultural products. Makes detailed observations, analyzes data and interprets results. Exercises general technical discretion in the design, execution and interpretation of experiments that contribute to project strategies. Prepares technical reports, summaries, protocols, and quantitative analyses. Contributes to project process within his/her scientific discipline. Investigates new methods and technologies for project advancement. Maintains high level of professional expertise through familiarity with scientific literature.


Principal Responsibilities:

  • Plan, schedule & conduct complete analyses of active ingredient content on product samples following established methods, including gas chromatography or high performance liquid chromatography analysis step. Propose solutions to a variety of technical problems.
  • Serve as Study Director with overall responsibility for insuring that assigned studies are conducted in compliance with regulatory FIFRA Good Laboratory Practice guidelines. Prepare protocols and reports with scientifically valid conclusions for submission to government agencies. Prepare responses to technical issues from regulatory agencies on submitted studies.
  • Conduct standard evaluations and analyses of physical and chemical properties of formulation samples, raw materials and packaging materials following established methods.
  • Assist in developing new methods or modify existing methods, if necessary, with guidance from supervisor. Record data and calculate results. Prepare data tables. Evaluate results and advise supervisor of anomalies.
  • Maintain & troubleshoot gas chromatographs and high performance liquid chromatographs with ability to interpret chromatograms to identify equipment malfunctions and chromatographic anomalies. Prepare and calibrate reference standard solutions.
  • Conduct laboratory support functions such as calibration and troubleshooting of laboratory instruments, maintaining chemical and equipment supplies, maintain laboratory organization and housekeeping, glassware and equipment decontamination, and waste disposal.
  • Ensure that all standard operating procedures are followed, and work is conducted at the highest level of safety.


Qualifications:

  • MS, chemistry or BS, science with 2-3 years of related experience.
  • Experience in conducting product or residue analyses. Skilled in advanced instrumental techniques such as gas chromatography, high performance liquid chromatography, and method development.
  • Experience in streamlining analytical data collection and data processing from multiple types of analytical instruments an asset.
  • Experience using electronic notebook and chemical inventory software highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of FIFRA Good Laboratory Practices and EPA Product Properties Test Guidelines preferred.

  • Physical Demands include constant sitting, walking, standing, bending at the neck and waist, squatting, climbing, kneeling, crawling, twisting at the neck and waist, simple grasping, power grasping, and fine manipulation with hands, pushing and pulling with hands, reaching above shoulder level, and lifting and carrying up to 25 lbs.; and occasional lifting and carrying of up to 50 lbs.
  • Work Environment includes exposure to or working in or around moving cars, trucks, forklifts, equipment and machinery including a computer keyboard and mouse; uneven ground; excessive noise; extremes in temperature, humidity, or wetness; dust, gas, fumes, or chemicals; heights; operation of foot controls or repetitive foot movement. May be required to wear a respirator and other personnel protective equipment (including special visual or auditory equipment).
  • Frequency Definitions: Constant = Over 40% / Frequent = Up to 40% / Occasional = Up to 10%
