Job Summary
We are actively recruiting for a junior Patent Associate to join the Intellectual Property group in our Chicago, Denver, Fort Wayne, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Philadelphia, Washington DC, or Wilmington offices.
Successful candidates should have 1-3 years of experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications. A background and degree(s) in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent technical expertise will be considered. Having a degree in engineering is preferred. State bar admission and admission with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) is required.
Candidates must be collaborative and motivated to succeed in a client-focused, team-oriented environment. Candidates must also have excellent academic credentials and have strong written and oral communications skills. This position offers competitive compensation and unlimited potential for professional growth. Current company plans for returning to work include an average of 2-3 days in the office.
Responsibilities
- Assist attorneys in preparing and filing patent, trademark, and copyright applications.
- Conduct thorough legal research using tools such as Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw to support case strategies.
- Draft legal documents, including pleadings, motions, and discovery requests related to intellectual property litigation.
- Maintain organized case files and documentation for ongoing litigation and negotiations.
- Communicate with clients regarding case status, deadlines, and required documentation.
- Collaborate with attorneys to develop strategies for negotiating settlements or litigating cases.
- Stay updated on changes in intellectual property law and regulations to ensure compliance.
- Support the team in managing deadlines for filings and responses in accordance with court rules.
Experience
- 1-3 years of experience drafting and prosecuting patent applications.
- United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).
- Proficiency in legal research tools such as Lexis-Nexis and Westlaw is essential.
- Familiarity with various areas of law including Family Law, Environmental Law, and Tribal Law Regulations is preferred but not required.
- Strong negotiation skills and experience in litigating intellectual property disputes are advantageous.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary for effective client interaction and document preparation.
Actual initial salary may be above or below the above-identified range and will be based on the relevant skills, training, experience, and other job-related factors, including the location of where the position is filled and consistent with applicable law.
