DESCRIPTION OF POSITION:
Under the supervision of the classroom instructor, the Teacher Assistant will be involved in a wide variety of planning, instruction, evaluative and routine duties in the classroom in order that more individual guidance and instruction may be given to the students by the regular instructor.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:
- Assist in preparing and keeping attendance records, seating charts, posting grades in roll books. El Check lunches and milk money, duplicate instructional materials by preparing dittos and/or stencils, distribute instructional materials and other classroom supplies. E Assist in classroom housekeeping. E
- Supervise groups of pupils on the playground or in small group activities. E
- Assist instructor in setting up classroom learning activities, tutor and encourage students who may face difficulty in comprehending their daily assignments. E
- Work with individuals and small groups instructing in Reading and Math. E
- Help to evaluate the effectiveness of various activities in the classroom. E
- Assist students to develop good study habits by working with the instructor in making known resource materials that are readily available for students use and help to adapt resources to individual needs. E
- Perform other duties as determined by the teacher.
EDUCATION AND CREDENTIALS:
- High school graduation or equivalent.
- Must pass proficiency examination if required by State or Federal guidelines.
- Teaching experience or professional or volunteer work with children's groups is highly desirable. Must meet requirements of "No Child Left Behind Act" (Associate Degree or two (2) years college required for all new applicants) added 11/01/02.
- In accordance with the provisions of the "No Child Left Behind Act," candidates possessing an Associates Degree or higher, or forty-eight (48) semester units, from an accredited institution of higher learning shall be hired in preference to those not possessing this requirement. Any person hired without these qualifications must meet the requirements of the Act by January of 2006.

- Relate to the classroom situation in a manner acceptable to professional teaching standards, including the ability to work cooperatively with others, to communicate well orally and in writing, and observe standards of conduct and courtesy acceptable as a model for students.
- Be outgoing and capable of taking the initiative when needed in the realm of normal duties.
- Understand children of various age groups; be alert and easily recognize the needs of students.
- Musical and/or artistic talents or abilities which could make learning situations more interesting would be highly desirable.
- The ability to operate basic office equipment, or the willingness and aptitude to learn is essential in carrying out the duties as assigned. The ability to type/keyboard is highly desirable.
