About Us:
The Pediatric General Medical Unit, known as Discovery, is an acute care unit dedicated to exceptional care for patients with various medical conditions. Our team specializes in diagnosing and treating issues such as sepsis, hyperbilirubinemia, seizures, rash or fever of unknown origin, generalized muscle weakness, cellulitis, abscess, ingestion, gastroenteritis, irritable bowel syndrome, short gut syndrome, and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). In winter, we focus on respiratory patients, providing expert care for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and pneumonia. A key emphasis for Discovery staff is patient and family education, starting at admission and continuing until discharge. Our nurses pride themselves on informative sessions covering essential topics like understanding diagnoses, proper medication administration, NJ feeds, GT care and feeding, as well as PPN and IL administration through a central line, including its care. Our nurses work closely with other professionals to deliver comprehensive and effective patient care. This collaboration is a core aspect of our approach, as we continuously strive to enhance patient outcomes and safety.

- Prior work or volunteer experience is preferred
- High school diploma as accredited by the US Department of Education or GED required
- Current enrollment with completion of at least two semesters/or equivalent in an accredited RN Program
- Enrollment throughout employment in an approved Work Study Course through an affiliated school (Fresno City College, CSU Fresno, West Hills, COS, SJVC, Merced, CSU Stanislaus)
- HeartCode Basic Life Support certification within 30 days of hire or transfer into position
- Advancement to PNE II is based on completion of the pediatric theory and clinical course work, and successful completion of the Valley Children's medication examination
- Must be able to complete the full, weeklong new hire/clinical orientation. Orientations will be offered in June, July, and August.
