SEL Teacher
Background:
The Valley Community Association is a non-profit, multi-faceted agency that provides services and programs to the residents of the Buffalo River Community. Services include child care, youth programs, senior citizen activities, family support services, and neighborhood beautification projects.
Position:
This is a part-time position within the “Striving for Excellence” after school program. The position will be approximately 15-25 hours weekly. The individual must be available between 3-6 PM, Monday-Friday.
As an SEL Teacher, you will provide opportunities for students to learn, practice, and demonstrate social-emotional skills within academic contexts during the “Striving for Excellence” after school program. You will primarily support Kindergarten-8thgrade students with identified social, emotional, and behavioral needs, as well as students with Individualized Education Programs (IEP). You will be responsible for explicitly teaching academic and social-emotional learning lessons to students during mindfulness block and other small group settings, using evidence-based strategies and programs such as restorative or social-emotional learning circles. You will also partner other teachers, the administrative team, and parents to discuss students’ individual needs and to develop and implement intervention plans.
Accountability:
This position reports to the Director of Youth Programs.
Responsibilities:
- Provide academic and social-emotional learning instruction throughout after-school, giving students the opportunity to learn and practice SEL skills along with academics.
- Directly teach social and emotional skills, emotion regulation strategies, and conflict resolution skills to individual students and small groups.
- Proactively identify ways to increase inclusion opportunities for students.
- Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and parents to understand student needs, identify appropriate interventions, and modify curriculum for students as needed.
- Create curriculum that aligns with NYS SEL benchmarks
- Gather and analyze data to monitor student progress towards goals.
- Communicate with Director and Academic Coordinator about student progress and challenges
- Engage in ongoing professional development and stay current with SEL research and best practices to be implemented in the classroom.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree and teaching experience in relevant field
- MA degree and relevant experience preferred
- Deep knowledge of SEL competencies, research, curriculum, strategies, and learning and instruction frameworks
- Knowledge of positive behavioral supports, de-escalation strategies, and trauma-informed practices
- Outstanding oral and written communication skills
- Strong interpersonal skills
