Job Description
The Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) provides medico-legal consultative and healthcare services, and works at the healthcare, legal system, and community-level. The FNE role is collaborative, and is part of a formal multidisciplinary investigative team process. The FNE possesses specialized knowledge in the healthcare management of victims and suspects, evidence collection, forensic documentation, and expertise in interpreting non-accidental trauma vs. normal variants, anatomic anomalies, and other/differential diagnoses. The role requires strong clinical skills that include designated medical functions. Key requirements include being available for on-call FNE services, willingness to travel, public speaking, and dedication to stay current in practice through literature review, certification, and continuing education.
Education
Bachelors Nursing (BSN) preferred
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing required
Completion of a basic-entry into Forensic Nursing course (meeting IAFN educational guidelines) preferred
Experience
Minimum three (3) years of experience in a specialized field of nursing (populations: women, infants, or children; emergency, or trauma) required
Certification & Licensures
Registered Nurse license
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ˜Healthcare Provider' (HCP) - AHA approved required *
Current SANE-A or SANE-P certification preferred
Based on primary state of residency and in accordance with current Virginia Board of Nursing Regulations, must be licensed or eligible to practice pending licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia with either a: Multi-state license, under the Nurse Licensure Compact OR Single-state license, valid in Virginia only.
**New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.
