Job Description
The Nurse Informaticist will demonstrate a commitment to VHS values (Compassion, Collaboration, Innovation, Excellence, Courage, Integrity) collaborating with staff and leadership to identify opportunities in efficiency and technical system compliance in the acute care environment and is responsible to implement solutions which leverage technology for outcomes improvement. The Nurse Informaticist will drive clinical transformation through careful analysis of current processes and workflows and change management strategies that align with VHS' strategic plan. The Nurse Informaticist must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills translating process and workflow decisions into educational materials, leveraging change management and adult learning principles. The Nurse Informaticist will leverage available resources, metrics, benchmarks and system standards at an assigned site and across the system.
Responsibilities and Duties
Identifies opportunities in efficiency and technical system compliance. Responsible to review, assess and master EPIC and related applications training.
Implements and documents training procedures for new clinical information systems and users. Assembles management reports as necessary using Tableau, Excel, Press Ganey and Epic.
Works with all clinical applications and supports all users providing expertise and creative solutions to user requirements and problems. Takes the initiative to research, resolve and respond to user inquiries to support workflow efficiency.
Assists in the review, development and documentation of clinical and technical workflows to support continuous quality improvement.
Assists in implementing and maintaining policies and procedures that correlate to computer functions.
Serves as a resource and troubleshoots technical problems and issues.
Partners and collaborates with application analysts to improve to make recommendations to users & vendors demonstrating critical thinking and follow through when developing solutions to identified issues.
Maintains effective timely communication between Site Administration/User Departments and Information Services, promoting the Information Systems Department's credibility and value in the organization.
Notifies appropriate support staff or vendors to correct as needed.
Participates in project implementation/upgrades.
Conducts or participates in system technical and application reviews to determine feasibility, cost and evaluate usefulness.
Leads in conducting system investigation to determine general feasibility, cost and alternative system solutions as evidenced by interviewing users to define requirements and objectives of automation.
Identifies best fit for processes and systems through analysis of software packages, making appropriate recommendations for best fit, as evidenced by user approval documentation, in accordance with Epic documentation standards.
Coordinates vendor demos, site visits and reference calls for new products and functionality.
Contributes towards the overall success of patient care initiatives with measurable outcome improvement including but not limited to employee engagement/retention, patient experience, departmental throughput metrics, and quality measures.
Identifies variation in processes and constructs the required representative team which will develop the steps of the redesign process and put in motion-an ongoing effort to reduce variation.
Educate and mentor employees to support their development and success.
Produce written communications/presentations and tables/graphs to summarize initiatives, outcomes, and trends for VH leadership.
Produce written communications for staff to support change management including workflows, step-by-step guides, and follow up summaries.
Collaborate with Epic analysts to build new Epic order sets, documentation workflows, dashboards, and reports. Participate in multi-disciplinary leadership meetings, staff workgroups, and WMC committee meetings.
Education
Bachelors Nursing (BSN) required
Masters Nursing (MSN) preferred
Experience
Minimum (5) years of experience in direct patient care in a hospital setting, acute care preferred
Minimum (3) years in clinical informatics experience with direct contact with clinician computer use, and some experience in applied systems development is preferred
Requires experience in change management, clinical informatics, project management, quality improvement methods and tools, data analysis methods and tools, decision support methods and tools, and electronic health records
Certification & Licensures
Licensed Registered Nurse in state of VA required. Based on primary state of residency and in accordance with current Virginia Board of Nursing Regulations, must be licensed or eligible to practice pending licensure as a Registered Nurse in the Commonwealth of Virginia with either a: Multi-state license, under the Nurse Licensure Compact OR Single-state license, valid in Virginia only.
BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ˜Healthcare Provider' (HCP) - AHA approved required. New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.
Nurse or Clinical Informatics Certification or plan to obtain in 1 year - preferred
Qualifications
Demonstrated experience in change management, clinical informatics, project management electronic health record implementation & optimization.
Demonstrated experience in conducting workflow analysis with documentation.
Ability to lead classroom training, resolve conflicts and manage training plans required.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and supervisors required.
Ability to work independently, set priorities, produce accurate work and meet deadlines required.
Ability to work in a setting with a wide variety of duties, numerous interruptions and changing demands.
Demonstrated proficiency in Press Ganey, Patient Experience, Excel, and Tableau required.
Ability to lead/collaborate within multi-disciplinary team to problem solve, implement change, and track outcomes.
Strong communication skills, both written and oral with all levels in the organization.
Strong analytical skills, specifically related to process improvement and data science - quality improvement methods and tools, data analysis methods and tools, decision support methods and tools
Demonstrated experience with patient experience improvement efforts and Press Ganey site administration.
Demonstrated proficiency in EPIC (including Reporting workbench and Slicer/Dicer), Microsoft Excel, and PowerPoint required. Demonstrated proficiency in Tableau and SharePoint preferred.
