Job Description

Enters demographic information/process/verify requisitions and ordered assays for all departmental testing. May also be asked to perform phlebotomist duties.

High School Diploma required
Associates degree in Biology and/or Chemistry preferred
Experience
One year of clinical laboratory processing preferred

Job Description
The Specimen Processor identifies all patient specimens according to the JCAHO patient safety goals, ensuring that all inpatient specimens have the correct name and medical record # and that all outpatient specimens have the correct patient name and date of birth. Enters demographic information/process/verify requisitions and ordered assays for all departmental testing. May also be asked to perform phlebotomist duties.
Use of Laboratory Information System: Enters demographic information/process/verify requisitions and ordered assays for all departmental testing.
- Receives all specimens in LIS, ensuring that the correct date, time and identity of phlebotomist are entered for all specimens.
- Monitors the “specimens not received, pending reports” and resolves all issues.
- Capable of using available information in LIS to answer telephone requests for tested data inclusive of dates and results.
- Reviews all departmental pending lists and researches questionable data appropriately.
- Logs esoteric specimens in proper computer system or manually, as appropriate.
- Identifies all patient specimens according to the JCAHO patient safety goals, ensuring that all inpatient specimens have the correct name and medical record # and that all outpatient specimens have the correct patient name and date of birth (DOB).
- Labels appropriate materials in accordance with the procedure manual and JCAHO (see above).
- Interacts with all laboratory sections with any ID or specimen integrity issues immediately upon receipt, to resolve as soon as possible.
- Interacts with phlebotomists to ensure that all QNS, lipemic, hemolyzed or other poor quality specimens are recollected ASAP.
- Enters data into Logicare ED system when specimens need to be recollected, supporting the communication between health care providers.
- Efficiently, accurately and in a timely manner processes all specimens to be tested in-house as well as those that are sent to reference labs, ensuring that the required temperatures and handling instructions are followed for all tests.
- Transfers calls when appropriate to scientific sections for request resolution.
- Assists in paging phlebotomists for Stat’s, recollects etc. to ensure the timely delivery of health care.
- Participates in continuing education opportunities as required by laboratory policy.
- Actively participates in staff meetings to give constructive ideas regarding lab operations, pre-analytic workflow etc.
- Participates in lab committees to contribute to the laboratory community.
- Other duties related to laboratory operations may be assigned
