The Welcome Baby Nurse

JOB SUMMARY:

  • Welcome Baby RNs are responsible for visiting families at that critical first home visit after discharge from the hospital. The Welcome Baby Nurse is responsible for supporting families, conducting maternal and newborn assessments and providing parent education in the areas of postnatal care, breastfeeding, parent-infant attachment, home safety and other maternal and child health related topics. They also help identify client strengths, needs, barriers and risks and provide community resources for those needs and provide and model empathetic support and feedback when working with new moms, babies and family members.

EXPERIENCE/QUALIFICATIONS:

  • At least six months experience in making home visits to families.
  • Ability to function as a member of an interdisciplinary team within Welcome Baby and other departments.
  • Ability to conduct a strength-based family assessment across a broad spectrum of areas using a validated, standardized tool administered in the prescribed manner.
  • Ability to promote bonding and attachment between infant-mother.
  • Experience working with families of diverse ages, cultural and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Empathy, warmth, and the ability to establish ongoing supportive relationships with an ethnically diverse population.
  • Knowledgeable about local community resources and able to refer families to appropriate agencies.
  • Knowledge of normal fetal, infant, and toddler development; prenatal and child health requirements; and early childhood education best practices.
  • Familiarity with the effects of domestic violence and parental alcohol and/or other drug abuse on family health, parenting, and general functioning.
  • Familiarity with the effects of perinatal depression on child development, parenting, and general functioning.
  • Skill in organizing and maintaining complete, accurate records and filing reports in a timely manner.
  • Skill in writing to articulate concepts and ideas in notes and reports.
  • Maintain professional boundaries with clients.
  • Willing to meet regularly with supervisor to develop a reflective practice and continuously assess their clinical nursing skills and identify areas that need special attention.
  • Bilingual preferred, with the ability to communicate in the language(s) represented in the community to be served.
  • Maintain California license as a registered nurse.
  • Willingness to work a flexible dayshift schedule that includes some Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays.

EDUCATION:

  • BSN RN with Public Health Nurse certification or BSN RN currently pursuing a PHN certification and will complete within one year of hire.

LICENSURES/CERTIFICATION:

  • Certified lactation educator (CLE) or certified lactation counselor (CLC) at a minimum; or certification must be completed within six months of hire; alternately staff may be certified lactation consultant (CLC) or international board-certified lactation consultant (IBCLC/RLC).
  • Public Health Nurse Certification or currently pursuing a PHN certification and will complete within one year of hire.
  • Must successfully complete and maintain LA City Fire Card certification at the time of hire or within the first 30 days of employment.

MUST HAVES:

  • At least one year of experience in maternal and/or newborn services with strong maternal and newborn clinical assessment skills.
  • All required licensures, certifications, mandatory education; along with annual occupational health screenings must be completed prior to the expiration date or by the end of the month in which they are due. Reference the Educational Requirements: Must Haves, Mandatory and Unit Based policy (in electronic policy management system) for the specific requirements for this position.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES (These are the essential job functions for this position. The essential functions of this job include, but may not be limited to those listed in this job description. Employees hired for this position must be able to perform the essential function of this job without imposing significant risk of substantial harm to the health or safety of themselves or others):

  • Responsible for conducting at least 40 engagement points per month 80% of the time.
  • Conducts home visits with postpartum clients within approximately one week of hospital discharge.
  • Conducts a maternal assessment of the client for postpartum recovery and signs and symptoms of postpartum complications.
  • Conducts a head to toe examination of the newborn to ensure healthy development, appropriate weight gain and assess for signs and symptoms of possible complications such as jaundice or dehydration.
  • Assesses infant feeding and provides assistance and support as needed.
  • Effectively conducts required client assessments using standardized tools for maternal depression, parent-infant attachment, social support, home safety, as well as other non-standardized clientassessments.
  • Refers client to medical provider in any complications with the mother or infant are identified and provides referrals for other services as needed.
  • Provides information to clients about maternal and infant health, breastfeeding, parenting, attachment, home safety, family planning, child development and other related topics using a client-centered approach.
  • Develops trust and rapport with clients and provides support using an empathic and client centered approach.
  • Adheres to all program guidelines, policies and protocols and actively works toward achieving the goals of the program.
  • Works closely with other Welcome Baby Nurses, Parent Coaches, Parent Coach Supervisor, Clinical Supervisor and administrative staff to provide a continuum of services.
  • Attends and participates in all staff meetings, bi-monthly group reflective supervision and weekly individual reflective supervision with the Clinical Supervisor.
  • Completes all needed paperwork for each client in a timely and organized manner, including clear and well written progress notes.
  • Completes required data entry for each client in a timely manner.
  • Participate in periodic Peer to Peer workshops, webinars and conference calls, and Welcome Baby and Home visitation regional meetings.
  • Complete Welcome Baby Training required for RN within one year of hire.
  • Complete CLE training within six months of hire.
  • Carries out the mission, vision and values established by the agency.
  • Maintains confidentiality of client records/information.
  • Other duties as assigned.
