What are the responsibilities and job description for the OSP Design Technician position at Valley Telephone?
SUMMARY
Responsible for all aspects of monitoring, planning, designing, constructing and implementation of copper & fiber facilities for designated exchanges and transport network.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following.
- Design and produce work prints for installation of fiber and copper facilities.
- Maintain detailed cable route schematics; update service order activity in records (manual and GIS systems).
- Write and submit R.O.W. and environmental permits to local and state agencies as required.
- Process service orders from various departments and allocate plant assignments for facilities.
- Open and process work orders and maintenance orders with the Records department as needed.
- Work with IT department on issues related to OSP.
- Assist with 911 issues and locating customers by coordinates in support of our Records department.
- Qualification of customers for DSL, fiber and broadband services.
- Provide OSP field personnel with information on cable pair, fiber, route, pedestal and customer location.
- Prepare material requisitions and verify materials issued to projects for updating Continuing Plant Records (CPR) for accounting.
- Upon request, assist other departments with research of plant records for NECA and tax studies.
- Develop relief plans for assigned areas and provide cost estimates and scheduling information for capital budgets.
- Responsible for compiling construction bid packages for budget projects, managing contract construction crews and verifying contractor invoicing.
- Provide inspection services for OSP construction projects.
- Evaluate and identify areas for cost effective deployment of advanced technology.
- Must have an understanding of network management tools to support network infrastructure and how it affects design choices.
- Maintains compliance to all relevant OSHA, safety or departmental standards as directed by supervisor.
- Works well with minimal supervision.
- A good understanding of GIS systems and or AutoCAD is a plus.
- Other duties may be assigned.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be familiar with RUS 515, 760 and 773 construction contracts and have extensive experience working with OSP contactors.
Must have valid Driver’s License and insurable record.
Must pass pre-employment screen, physical and background checks.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must have working knowledge of personal computers, knowledge of Microsoft Office, Visio,
Auto Cad, service order systems and GIS systems.
Must communicate effectively with vendors, contractors, customers and employees.
Qualified Notary Public is a plus.
Must be able to do occasional travel and overnight trips.
