Looking for a part-time (24 hours/week) RN House Supervisor - nights with weekend rotations. Responsibilities include serving as a resource for staff, physicians, and patients for administrative decisions that directly affect patient care in collaboration with department and physician leadership. Facilitates appropriate and efficient patient placement within the admission process and coordinates patient movement within VVH in a competent, safe and timely manner. Promotes patient and employee safety and facilitates timely reporting of all incidents to Risk Management.
SCHEDULE
- Working nights, part-time 24 hours/week, with weekend rotations.
PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
1. Functions as the administrative representative in the absence of hospital administration. Communicates with the administrator on call as needed.
2. Maintains situational awareness of the current state of the hospital. Makes regular rounds and maintains awareness of staffing, patient acuities, and workloads as well as patient, family, and physician concerns that impact patient flow and patient care.
3. Serves as a resource for information and judgment based on clinical expertise, knowledge of hospital policy, and the ability to make decisions.
4. Promotes patient and employee safety and facilitates timely reporting of all incidents to Risk Management.
5. Coordinates patient care activities by acting as interdepartmental liaison and facilitates communication between nursing units and ancillary departments. Fosters teamwork and team building. Demonstrates effective communication skills including listening, oral, nonverbal and written communication. Provides reassurance, acceptance and encouragement to staff, patients, families and visitors during times of stress.
6. Provides ongoing feedback (verbal and written) evaluating the actions of staff and reports feedback in a timely manner to unit directors.
7. Demonstrates effective leadership, problem-solving, conflict resolution and delegation skills. Acts as a change agent.
8. Maintains an efficient admission process for patients. Works collaboratively with physicians, clinical directors and facilitators to prioritize bed assignments. Makes final decision and assignment of patient bed placement.
9. Communicates with Hospitalists, VVH physicians, outside hospitals and facilities and referring physicians regarding the status of their admission or transfer requests.
10. Responsible to activate the call teams for Endo and Surgical Services off-shift, weekends, holidays and/or when these departments are closed.
11. Coordinates and facilitates inter-facility transports with transferring physicians, accepting facilities and transport agencies. Completes all transfer (EMTALA) paperwork with each transfer. (This is a shared responsibility with Case Management)
12. Works collaboratively with unit directors/clinical supervisors/facilitators on daily staffing requirements, assessing house-wide patient care needs and anticipating fluctuations in volume and adjusting staffing levels accordingly. Monitors house-wide activities, mobilizing staff to all departments based on acuity of need and skill mix required.
13. Responds to patient emergencies to provide leadership. Supports the Code Blue and Rapid Response Teams to promote quality patient outcomes.
14. Institutes emergency protocols in coordination and collaboration with the administrator on call. May serve as Incident Commander until appropriate members of the leadership team are able to respond.
16. Completes all paperwork associated with the patient death. Coordinates with Funeral Homes. Assists families with end-of-life decisions as needed.
17. Is a Designated Requestor for Donor Alliance (VVH’s OPO) and coordinates Anatomical Gifts with Donor Alliance per CMS regulations.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education:
- State licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN). (DORA)
- BLS through the American Heart Association with card in-hand before start date.
- BSN is preferred.
Skills:
- Ability to make critical judgments on behalf of hospital administration
- Ability to act as clinical resource regarding VVH’s range of nursing services provided
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple processes through the workday
- Ability to effectively communicate with a variety of staff, physicians and outside agencies
Experience:
- Minimum 4 years current nursing experience in acute setting
- Leadership in nursing field preferred
