Chief Purpose of This Position :

The Department of Radiation Oncology at Virginia Commonwealth University is looking to hire a board-eligible or board-certified full-time clinical faculty Radiation Oncologist with an interest in multi-specialty Oncology with specific interest and experience in adolescent and pediatric services. The individual hired into this position will serve as one of our primary clinical Radiation Oncologists for our downtown Richmond, VA facilities, primarily servicing our inpatient population by providing consultative and external beam radiotherapy treatment services and being responsible for quality of care within this population. Additionally, this position will serve as a key lead in the continued development of adolescent and pediatric services, including a survivorship clinic.

Position Responsibilities :

As one of our primary radiation oncologists providing consultative and external beam radiotherapy treatment services at our downtown facilities, responsibilities will include :

  • Teaching : Time and effort [~5%] shall be devoted to teaching and teaching-related activities, primarily including medical students, dental students, graduate students, allied health students, residents, fellows, and colleagues. Teaching responsibilities also include preparation of instructional materials, evaluative materials, testing, and maintenance of personal professional skills through continuing education, advising and mentoring trainees, and participation in academic reinforcement programs.
  • Research : Time and effort [~5%] shall be devoted to research-related activities. The primary responsibility will be active participation in clinical research, including clinical trial design and enrollment of patients in clinical trials. Active participation in national cooperative research organizations to further the mission of the Massey Cancer Center is strongly encouraged. Collaborative activities with laboratory scientists, both inside and outside the institution, leading to translational research projects are also encouraged. Obtaining extramural support for clinical research through industry or other funding agencies is strongly encouraged.
  • Service : Time and effort [80%] shall be devoted to the provision of clinical services. The individual hired is expected to maintain a broad general radiation oncology practice and proficiency in external beam radiotherapy techniques. The necessity to take primary responsibility for specific types of cases may arise through rotations on the inpatient consultation service or coverage during the absence of other members of the department. There is an expectation to integrate students and residents into this service on an intermittent basis. Active participation in multidisciplinary tumor boards is also expected. The incoming candidate will be provided the necessary space (clinical and office), clerical, and nursing support to carry out all duties.
  • Other : Time and effort [10%] shall be devoted to academic service-related activities. This includes college, school, and departmental committee work, professional growth, and other such assignments. The department’s upcoming goals include development of an AYA (adolescent young adult) survivorship program. Development and maintenance of this program will be a priority for the individual hired into this position.

Required Qualifications :

The successful candidate holds a MD or DO degree or equivalent and is either board-certified or board-eligible in Radiation Oncology or its equivalent; brings a dedication to clinical practice and to collegial multidisciplinary care in a community setting; and has demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment, or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU. The primary clinical function of this position will be servicing the inpatient population. The incoming candidate would require experience and commitment to a majority of clinical dedication to this space as we seek coverage for no less than 3 days a week.

Preferred Qualifications :

Interest in clinical research is also desirable, as our focus to be leaders in cancer innovation is at the forefront of our mission for all Radiation Oncology Department providers.

We remain connected outside of the clinic too, as we aim to gather everyone together at least once a year, and we have an active group of runners and walkers who participate in the annual Monument Avenue 10K / Massey Cancer Center fundraiser as “The Beam Team”!

The Department supports a sizeable educational program, including a Radiation Oncology residency, Medical Physics residency, Medical Physics graduate program, and post-doctoral research programs in Physics and Biology.

Our full range of clinical services currently includes : IMRT, image-guided brachytherapy, cone-beam CT-guided radiotherapy, on-line portal imaging, and stereotactic radiosurgery. Technologies available in our downtown facilities include : MR linac (ViewRay), PET CT simulator, and MR simulator.
