Job Description
We are seeking an experienced Senior CNC Machinist with extensive expertise in CNC programming, tool selection, and machining processes. In this role, you will play a crucial part in the precision manufacturing of our cutting-edge hypersonic systems. Your responsibilities will include setting up, operating, and maintaining CNC machines to produce high-precision parts and components based on engineering specifications and drawings. Additionally, you will mentor junior machinists and collaborate with engineering and production teams to continually optimize machining operations. Working independently and as part of a team, you will contribute to maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Mentor entry-level and junior machinists, providing guidance and support for their professional development
- Calculate dimensions and tolerances using mathematical skills and precision instruments like micrometers and vernier calipers
- Machine parts to specifications using tools such as lathes, milling machines, shapers, and grinders
- Measure, examine, and test completed units to ensure they meet specifications using precision instruments
- Operate and maintain ST-45L lathes and VF-5XT mills to ensure optimal performance
- Diagnose and resolve machine malfunctions by observing and listening to equipment
- Maintain documentation, including process sheets, inspection reports, and CAM data, for part traceability and quality assurance
- Select and set cutting speeds, feed rates, and tools based on machining instructions and metal properties
- Machine a variety of materials, including carbon fiber, fiberglass, and graphite
- Conduct in-process inspections and maintain documentation
- Support, promote, and demonstrate VALT’s core values
- Provide constructive feedback and praise to support team growth
Qualifications:
- Associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering technology (preferred)
- Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in CNC machining, with experience in a senior or lead role
- Vocational training or job-related course work (preferred)
- Expertise in conceptual design, analysis, process improvement, verbal communication, coordination, attention to detail, and judgment
- Strong understanding of machining processes, materials, and tool selection
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, cross functional, highly collaborative manufacturing team to advance our unique suborbital and orbital launch systems
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in machine tools, repairs, and maintenance
- Advanced knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, and their applications
- Thorough understanding of raw materials, production processes, quality control, cost management, and manufacturing techniques
- Ability to obtain and maintain secret/TS level security clearance
