Job Summary
Reporting to the EHS&S Manager, the EHS&S Specialist will assist in the implementation of Environmental, Health, Safety, and Security processes and initiatives in support of site programs, the Responsible Care Management System, and facility and corporate goals. This role is designed to lead or support all functions of EHS&S at the Bridgeport, New Jersey plant. Additionally, this EHS&S Specialist will serve as a change agent for process and system improvements, administering policies and procedures for the Bridgeport, New Jersey Plant. This role will champion Valtris’ Culture and Values.
Essential Responsibilities
- Maintains compliance of EHS programs and procedures through support, review, and modification. Assists in EHS procedure improvement and auditing.
- Manage the plant B.E.S.T. Program. Provide leadership and necessary training for Behavior Based Safety for Observers. Communicate to employees the results of Observations and Safe & At-risk behaviors and provide support in developing actions plans for the departments.
- Coordinate and deliver plant-wide EHS training per the annual Training Compliance Calendar. Maintain training documentation. Maintain the site’s Computer-Based Training (CBT) system.
- Schedule, perform, and document all IH monitoring per the IH Annual Status Report / Strategy and Assessment.
- Support implementation and maintenance of the Valtris ISO 9001 and Responsible Care Management System.
- Coordinate and track employee’s required medical clearances.
- Ensure compliance with all regulatory requirements as they pertain to the site.
- Acts as a leader in driving site safety culture, including participating in and driving efforts for the site's safety committee.
- Participates in incident investigations; verifying root cause and verifying that recommended corrective actions are adequate to address the root cause findings.
- Contributes to audits as applicable and participates in internal audit closing meetings, assisting with the development of corrective actions, implementation of approved actions and follow-up for effectiveness after completion.
- Conducts Environmental, Health and Safety surveys, inspections, audits to identify potential regulatory/safety risks.
- Maintain site’s New Jersey Environmental Laboratory Certification and WWTP’s QA Registration.
- Provide direct support for the site’s Contractor Program, which includes training, orientation, prequalification, and auditing responsibilities.
- Lead and oversee activities to maintain OSHA VPP status.
- Perform and/or oversee EHS compliance equipment inspections and calibrations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
- 3-5 years of work experience in environmental, health and safety field. Chemical manufacturing experience preferred.
- Minimum Associates Degree in Safety, Engineering, Chemistry, or in an equivalent technical field. A BS degree is preferred.
- Computer literate in Microsoft Office Suite including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of EHS consensus standards (e.g., OSHA, EPA, NFPA, ANSI, PSM and Behavior Based Safety.)
- Must be able to complete a medical evaluation by a physician that certifies the ability to wear a respirator.
- Able to work off-shift hours on occasion based on site needs.
- Advanced organization, multitasking, and prioritization are essential skills for success in this role, as well as excellent oral and written communication.
- Ideal candidate would be a self-starter that is comfortable both working independently as well as on a team.
Physical Requirements
- Able to climb stairs and ladders without limitation.
- Able to walk, bend stoop without limitation.
- Able to wear a negative pressure elastomeric seal respirator.
- Able to visit/walk through a manufacturing environment with the following conditions: chemical and mechanical operations, dust and fumes, working within safe but proximity to forklift and machine operations, exposure to heat and humidity, hearing or talking around loud machinery, and wearing of personal protective equipment.
