Position Summary / Objective

The purpose of this position is to ensure compliance with all laws and regulations for a licensed pharmacy in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The Pharmacist may provide functional supervision to staff in a single pharmacy location (i.e. not a multi-store pharmacy). The pharmacist verifies and dispenses medications pursuant to physicians’ or other health care practitioner orders; provides clinical consultation, support and education to staff, patients and other health care professionals; provides functional supervision of professional, paraprofessional and support staff; performs related duties as required. The person in this position also assists in planning, coordinating and managing the pharmacy to control costs, maintain projected profit margins, meet and / or exceed sales goals, provide a pleasant, courteous experience for the patient and maintains positive working conditions for workforce members.

Essential Functions

  • Comply with company guidelines and applicable federal and state regulations, maintaining strict oversight of controlled substances according to federal DEA regulations and state pharmacy laws, conforming to the most stringent laws, regulations, and policies. Perform ADR (Adverse Drug Reaction) reporting.
  • Consult with physicians, nurses, patients, and other persons authorized to represent the patient or pharmacy regarding pharmaceutical questions; advise physicians on formulary medications and cost-effective therapies; answer pharmaceutical questions from patients and staff; monitor storage, distribution, and use of pharmaceuticals; work with pharmaceutical manufacturers and insurance companies.
  • Verify all new and refill orders, coordinate and oversee filling processes, QA / AI, pharmacist verification, shipping and patient administration / receipt confirmed, and patient follow up functions.
  • Maintain information required for compliance with the DSCSA.
  • Assist in inventory control by monitoring ordering, oversee inventory counts and returns and outdated / expired drugs.
  • Assist in maintaining records of all pharmacy and prescription transactions to ensure accurate accountability for all drugs as required by state and federal laws, rules, and regulations.
  • Perform patient consultations and assessments.
  • Conduct online medication research to remain up to date on medications.
  • Utilize Drug Utilization Review (DUR) Program.
  • Ensure organization, work discipline and morale are consistent with pharmacy standards, as well as safe working conditions.
  • Ensure job functions are completed and in compliance with standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Participate in review of error reports and make adjustments to improve error / accuracy record.
  • Perform all department personnel functions in compliance with company guidelines, to include : provision of opportunities for workforce member development and advancement, setting an example of personal integrity, appearance and ethical business practices to provide a standard of conduct for all department personnel.
  • Oversee claims benefit investigation and monitor prior authorizations and processing.
  • Assist with audit review and appeals and perform analysis of adjudicated claims. Assist with non-formulary appeals.
  • Enforce Quality Improvement Program and facilitate QA / QI error reduction and prevention.
  • Document and report medication errors to Pharmacist In Charge.
  • Ensure all medications are stored and shipped properly as per specific manufacturer temperature requirements.
  • Assure all necessary pharmacy licenses are in compliance and in good standing with respective agencies.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This position operates in a quiet office environment with frequent supervision.

Competencies

Licensed Pharmacist in good standing, knowledge of specialty medication therapies, their effects on the body and the disease state, side effects, adverse events, mechanism of drug action, drug-drug and drug-disease state interactions, dosing, and follow up with patients, including monitoring compliance and non-drug advice on maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including diet. Knowledge of prior authorizations and insurance processes. Ability to operate pharmacy management system, ability to understand and follow policies and procedures, written and oral communication proficiency, accuracy, time management, multi-tasking, leadership, teamwork, problem solving ability, collaboration skills, presentation skills, calculator, expert telephone skills, and email skill. Ability to meet tight deadlines and handle changing priorities and emergencies.

Physical demands typical of this position

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit and / or stand for long periods of time, walk, use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse, and other computer or office equipment. Visual acuity to read printed material and a computer screen and ability to concentrate. May require occasional lifting of up to 30 lbs.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position oversees the work activities of pharmacy technicians when serving as the lead onsite pharmacist.

Travel

Work-related travel may occasionally be required for continuing education purposes.

Required Education and Experience

Bachelor of Science or PharmD Degree

Minimum of five years of professional experience as a pharmacist. Familiarity with state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to legal pharmacy operations. Complete required CEUs to maintain credentials and licensure.

Preferred Education and Experience

Specialty Pharmacy experience.

Immunization certification.

Security Clearance / Background Check

Pass a federal background check and drug screen.
