PRINCIPLE DUTIES
An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following (these examples do not include all the tasks in which the employee may be expected to perform).
PURPOSE: Act as lead court security officer and provide security for court complex buildings in Paw Paw and South Haven.
Possess and maintain a valid driver's license, vehicle registration, and access to dependable transportation
(satisfactory driving record required). Must have a solid working knowledge and experience with computers, software applications and keyboarding skills. Must be able to multitask and facilitate courtroom operations/ duties as needed. Must be able to be on your feet for long periods of time to assist in the court's workflow. Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing. Proven ability to deal with difficult people and diffuse potentially volatile situations.
Shall be required to obtain and maintain a Michigan Permit to Carry a Concealed Weapon. Required to pass and maintain certification/ proficiency in a variety of training areas, included but not limited to, firearms, defensive tactics and first aide/ basic life support.
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Selected and deputized by the Sheriff of Van Buren County and under the general supervision of the Sheriff or his/her designee, acts as the lead court security officer and assigns all court security personnel to perform security related duties for the Van Buren County Courts. May be assigned to any court facility. Provides lead support in managing the court security and prisoner transportation needs. Requires extensive knowledge of office procedures and exercise of sound independent judgement. Serves as the court security representative for operational coordination of the security functions performed for the court by the Sheriff's Office. May be required to work flexible hours and may be required to make arrests during the course of his/her duties. Performs any and all duties assigned to court security as needed.SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
High school diploma or GED required. Applicant must be MCOLES licensed or licensable and in good standing with the Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement standards. Previous experience in a supervisory setting preferred. Citizen of the United States. Previous experience as a law enforcement officer. Ability to use firearms. SPECIAL EMPLOYMENT REQUIREMENTS:
Employment is dependent on background check, criminal history and fingerprint check and drug screen. Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license. Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical, including drug screen, criminal record and background check before employment. Regular, reliable and predictable attendance is required.Shall be required to obtain and maintain a Michigan Permit to Carry a Concealed Weapon. SUPERVISION REQUIRED
Work is performed under the general direction of the Sheriff or his/her designee. The lead court security officer works with the Chief Judge or his/her designee to coordinate daily security assignments and related tasks as needed.PRINCIPLE DUTIES

- Acts as lead for day-to-day security operations, projects and assignments for the security needs of the court and makes recommendations for improvements. Responsible for the implementation and communication of policies and procedures and training of court security personnel with regard to security and safety issues.
- Participates in staff training and issues work assignments. Provides input to the Sheriff or their designee regarding performance evaluations and disciplinary actions. Maintains and coordinates time records and schedules for court security officers.
- Make custodial arrests as required by court orders and as required to keep public peace.
- Coordinates protection and security for jurors, witnesses, court staff, and the public involved in court proceedings. Performs patrol and security checks of hallways, offices and other areas inside or outside of any court or county facility where court proceedings are occurring. May be assigned to assist in monitoring of metal detection and/or other security/emergency duties.
- Controls and maintains order in the courtroom and/or the building by enforcing county and court policies relating to building security and efficient courtroom operations. Requests additional security as needed and coordinates assignments.
- Assists law enforcement officers and court officials in emergencies according to established procedures for the clearing of the building personnel, conducting searches, etc.
- Reviews dockets for active bench warrants.
- Arranges for transportation and/or transports prisoners or youth to and from the jail, holding cells or Juvenile transport vehicle.
- Maintains continuous radio monitoring and contact using proper radio protocol policies and procedures with court and county security personnel. Responds to calls as needed within the facility.
- Must be able to learn to access, enter and retrieve data/ information via a computer terminal. May be required to prepare letters, memos, reports, statistical data, and manuals using standard word-processing or spreadsheet software.
- Works with the court/ county security committee to develop policies, procedures and training for personnel, security response protocol for courtrooms, building security and emergency evacuation planning, and handling custody of defendants or juveniles.
- Develops and implements plans for testing related security equipment and protocols. (i.e. panic alarms, building fire alarms, etc.)
- Appear and/or testify in civil, criminal, and/or traffic litigation cases
- Acts as liaison with courts, jail local police and fire departments.
- Completes special projects and other related duties as assigned by the Sheriff or his/her designee
