The primary goals of the BGLC Assistant Principal are to: a) hire, train and supervise program and support staff, b) ensure the provision and high quality special education programming to students, and c) lead an effective and efficient building.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
Master’s degree required
Certification:
Endorsement of other professional certification for the provision of special education, special education approval for Supervisor/Director with adequate continuing education credits toward maintaining such certifications.
Work Experience:
Five years of experience in a special education field or other position(s) of leadership significantly related to the responsibilities described in this job description
Skills:
- Ability to create/provide effective technical assistance in a variety of formats and venues to diverse constituencies on issues pertaining to special education
- Ability to administer professional development in all areas of special education
- Ability to implement and train individuals in “best practices” related to special education
- Possess expertise with data collection and compliance with Federal and State of Michigan Rules and Regulations
- Ability to provide leadership on implementing systematic changes to improve the overall delivery of special education programming and services
- Ability to foresee future trends in education
- Ability to work with superintendents, principals, teachers and parents
- Ability to write short and complete policies and procedures for special education that are understood by all
- Ability to sit or stand for longer periods of time
- Ability to physically intervene and/or use de-esclataion strategies if needed
- Ability to understand the perspective from several points of view (superintendent, ISD vs LEA, building principal, special education teacher, general education teacher, support staff and parent)
- Must be child oriented
Essential Job Functions:
- Act as an instructional leader in the building promoting best practices in curriculum, assessment, instruction and positive behavioral support.
- Actively involved with School Improvement Process.
- Promote data-based decision making.
- Evaluate staff as assigned by the Principal.
- Promote strong family involvement.
- Assist the Principal in the planning and implementation of staff professional development activities.
- Work collaboratively with various community agencies.
- Work cooperatively with the BGLC Principal in conducting REED, Eligibility Recommendation and IEPT meetings.
- Act as facilities manager for the building in consultation with the Principal or Associate Superintendent for Administrative Services.
- Assist Principal with the collection and reporting of data for the pupil accounting process and the local district bill back system.
- Help coordinate transportation needs for all BGLC students.
- Supervise other staff as assigned by the Principal.
- Perform other tasks and assume other responsibilities as may be assigned by the Principal.
General Responsibilities
- Adhere to policies and procedures of the Van Buren ISD
- Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed upon time lines.
- Perform additional tasks, responsibilities and duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education and the Superintendent.
Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
