Job Goals:
The primary goal is to improve the success of students with disabilities in school through direct service and consultation with students, teachers, parents, administrators, and community agencies. This position also supports Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) initiatives, coordinates with outside agencies, manages crisis situations, facilitates communication with parents, and serves as a member of the multidisciplinary special education team.
Qualifications:
Education:
Master’s Degree in Social Work required
Certification:
- Michigan approval or eligible for approval as a school social worker
- LMSW or LLMSW required
Work Experience:
- Experience in special education school social work, including serving as a member of a multidisciplinary special education team, preferred.
- Strong background in student intervention, including providing direct services through the IEP process, crisis management, and collaboration with families, school teams, and community agencies.
- Familiarity with Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) programs, as well as supporting students with behavioral and emotional needs.
Skills:
Knowledge in the following areas:
- School-based consultation and service
- Individualized Education Program (IEP) development and progress monitoring
- Special Education evaluation processes
- Collaboration with family, school, and community agencies
General professional skills, including a willingness to:
- Provide a range of services to students as identified via the IEP process.
- Provide consultation and support to families and school personnel to support student success.
- Serve as a liaison to help coordinate efforts between school, home, community agencies, and other service providers.
- Perform comprehensive special education evaluations in alignment with state and local policies and procedures.
- Document and evaluate services on a regular basis.
- Seek ongoing professional learning and accept feedback in a professional way.
- Demonstrate the VBISD principles of Respect, Integrity, Compassion, and Excellence.
- Effectively communicate and collaborate with school teams, parents, and community agencies and providers.
- Adhere to federal, state and Van Buren ISD policies and procedures.
- Complete assigned responsibilities within agreed-upon or established timelines.
- Perform additional tasks, responsibilities, and duties as assigned by the Special Education Supervisor or Director of Special Education.
Essential Job Functions:
- Valid Driver's License required.
- Ability to sit and work on a computer for extended periods of time.
- Ability to travel across the county.
Terms of Employment: As per master agreement and provisions established by the Van Buren Board of Education.
