What are the responsibilities and job description for the Shipfitter position at Vanator?
Overview:
A Shipfitter (Green Badge) is responsible for fabricating, assembling, and repairing metal structures on ships and marine vessels. Since Green Badge holders do not have a security clearance, they must work under escort when inside Security Islands and follow strict access protocols.
Key Responsibilities:
- Structural Fabrication & Assembly:
- Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and ship construction drawings.
- Cut, bend, and shape metal using torches, saws, plasma cutters, and grinders.
- Fit and align structural components for welding, bolting, or riveting.
- Welding & Metalwork Preparation:
- Perform tack welding to hold metal components in place.
- Assist certified welders in final welding procedures.
- Use measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, tape measures) to ensure precision.
- Ship Repair & Maintenance:
- Repair hulls, bulkheads, and decks according to Navy and shipyard specifications.
- Remove and replace damaged or corroded metal sections.
- Reinforce ship structures to enhance durability and safety.
- Compliance & Safety:
- Adhere to PSNS safety regulations, OSHA standards, and shipyard protocols.
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Work under escort supervision when inside restricted areas (Security Islands).
Requirements:
- Experience:
- Previous experience as a shipfitter, welder, or structural fabricator in a shipyard or heavy industrial setting.
- Familiarity with ship construction and repair techniques.
- Skills:
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and blueprints.
- Skilled in metal cutting, shaping, and fitting.
- Basic knowledge of welding techniques (MIG, TIG, Stick).
- Comfortable working in confined spaces and at heights.
- Education & Certifications:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Technical training or apprenticeship in shipfitting or metal fabrication preferred.
- OSHA safety training and shipyard certification a plus.
Job Types: Full-time, Contract
Pay: $26.00 - $29.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40 per week
