The Assistant Director serves on the management team of the Margaret Cuninggim Women's Center, a campus unit which addresses the needs of women at Vanderbilt University. The Assistant Director aids the Director in the day-to-day management of the Women's Center, coordinates major programming events and ongoing programming activities, facilitates student leadership development, advises student interns and groups, and supervises the Center's graduate assistant. Reporting to the Director of the Margaret Cuninggim Women's Center, the Assistant Director collaborates across departments and divisions in service of the mission of the Women's Center. This is a full-time, onsite position.

About The Work Unit

Founded in 1978, the Margaret Cuninggim Women's Center is a resource for programming, support, and referrals related to gender topics such as sexual health, pregnancy, body image, disordered eating, healthy relationships, and women's leadership. Home to undergraduate student internships such as Vandy Sex Ed, the Bold Space, and the Women's Center Ambassadores, as well as to signature events including the Cuninggim Lecture on Women in Culture and Society, the Margaret Cuninggim Women's Center is an affirming space for women and for all members of the Vanderbilt community that actively resists sexism and all forms of oppression.

Program Management

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Design, coordinate, deliver, and evaluate university-wide events related to women's and gender issues for students, faculty, and staff.
  • Execute programming in a coordinated and logistically sound manner to maximize impact. This includes but is not limited to securing reservations and catering, developing marketing materials and timelines, submitting events to relevant calendars, and creating relevant assessments.

Marketing

  • Utilize office listservs, social media accounts, and marketing materials to tell a compelling and accurate story of the work of the Margaret Cuninggim Women's Center at Vanderbilt to drive engagement.

Student Mentorship

  • Provide financial guidance to student organizations and student-driven programming.
  • Advise and mentor undergraduate student interns and members of student groups.
  • Meet with students, faculty, and staff to provide information about campus and community resources, support, and referrals.

Other Duties Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Hire, train, supervise, and evaluate graduate assistants and student workers.
  • Represent the Women's Center at various events, on committees, and at other meetings.
  • Participate in events with Student Affairs partner offices as needed (Diverse-Dores Day, cultural celebrations, etc.) to support colleagues and ensure these events run smoothly.
  • Maintain an understanding of institutional and departmental financial policies related to areas such as travel, procurement, expense, and time reporting to ensure compliance and proper stewardship of university resources.

Supervisory Relationships

This position supervises a graduate assistant and multiple student interns; this position reports administratively and functionally to the director of the Margaret Cuninggim Women's Center.

Education And Certifications

  • A bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education, relevant military experience, and relevant skills is necessary.
  • A master's degree is strongly preferred.

Experience And Skills

  • Extensive knowledge of women's and gender issues both within and beyond a higher education environment is required.
  • Excellent decision-making and time management skills are required.
  • Strong organizational skills are required.
  • Excellent written/verbal communication skills are required.
  • Experience coordinating programs and initiatives related to women, gender, sexuality, and/or social justice broadly is strongly preferred.
  • A strong interest in mentoring and developing students is strongly preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal/human relations skills including ability to develop and cultivate professional relationships is preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with students from varied backgrounds attending a highly selective institution with a broad range of campus groups, departments, and organizations is preferred.
  • Experience with event planning and event management skills are preferred
