The Assistant Director plays a key role in the Environmental Health, Safety, and Sustainability (EHSS) organization at Vanderbilt University. They manage the radiation and laser safety programs, serving as the university's Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) to meet regulatory obligations.
This position is responsible for providing innovative leadership for a comprehensive laboratory program that ensures a safe work environment for all VU research community members, preventing loss of life and injury to faculty, staff, students, and visitors, protecting the environment, and safeguarding VU property.
Key responsibilities include acting as subject matter expert in radiation and laser safety, leading compliance-related regulatory inspections, developing policies and procedures, establishing relationships with VUMC OCRS, implementing EHS Assist software, and ensuring regulatory findings are addressed.
The Assistant Director oversees the EHSS team, supervising 3-5 professional staff and student interns, and collaborates with various stakeholders to develop effective emergency response plans for VU laboratories.
To be successful in this role, the ideal candidate should possess a master's degree, relevant certifications, and extensive experience in radiation and laser safety concepts, standards, and regulations. They should also have strong interpersonal communication and customer service skills, ability to build and maintain effective working relationships, and expertise in Microsoft and Adobe products such as TEAMS, PowerPoint, Excel, and Word.
