Job Description
The Sergeant - Drug Detection Canine Handler position involves performing law enforcement and crime prevention duties, as well as general police/security services. The handler will perform patrol functions, including community-oriented policing, traffic checks, and area patrols. They will also provide field supervision, support, and backup to officers while working in assigned areas.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Perform direct field supervision of police, master police, and security officers in routine patrol, directed patrol, community policing, and special event activities.
- Review and assist officers on incident reports, accident reports, and other reports prepared daily. Ensure accuracy of information on reports, including case number, report number, and classification.
- Prepare routine and special reports as necessary, submitting them to supervisors for review and approval.
- Train new police officers and evaluate their performance according to the Field Training Program.
- Monitor and coach others for improved work performance, participating in counseling sessions as needed.
- Conduct performance evaluations fairly and impartially.
Investigations
- Provide initial investigation for all calls of criminal activity and accidents.
- Protect and maintain crime scenes as necessary.
- Coordinate with detectives regarding cases requiring additional expertise or involvement of CIU.
- Interview victims, witnesses, and suspects, informing them of options available and additional processes to follow.
- Photograph and process crime scenes or coordinate resources for required processing.
- Conduct photo lineups and additional investigative duties as needed.
- Provide crime prevention information to victims to reduce re-victimization.
- Perform field stops and interviews, making arrests, issuing citations, and giving warnings.
- Prepare and submit applicable offense reports, follow-up reports, and other documentation as needed.
