The Assistant Dean for Career Services leads the Career Services team in the Law School at Vanderbilt University and is the senior administrator responsible for student placement, employment programming, data analysis and reporting, and partnering with other units at the Law School (e.g., Admissions, Academic & Student Life, Development & Alumni Relations, Marketing & Communications, and Public Interest) The position reports directly to the Dean of the Law School.

Vanderbilt Law School's Career Services Office excels in placing students and alumni in private- and public-sector positions at law firms, government offices, and public interest legal organizations in more than 30 states each year. Career Services focuses on achieving 100% employment for graduates known for their outstanding legal training and strong interpersonal and professional skills.

Key Functions and Expected Performance:
The Assistant Dean for Career Services supervises all aspects of the Law School Career Services Office (CSO) including:
  • Leading the career services team, including career advisors and staff, delegating tasks and ensuring efficient operations.
  • Overseeing career services budgetary planning and development.
  • Ensuring adherence to all relevant American Bar Association (ABA) and other accreditation standards related to career services.
  • Developing and implementing comprehensive “best-in-class” strategies to increase student employment outcomes including, but not limited to:
o Developing effective relationships with legal employers and recruiters.
o Developing effective relationships with students, alumni, and staff.
o Monitoring all national markets to maximize student opportunities.
o Partnering with all relevant law school units
o Initiating and overseeing Career Services programming, including on-campus interview programs, remote interview programs, resume collection, and informational programming on career issues (including potential pathways and relevant skill building and resume building)
o Staying abreast of cutting-edge career services tools, including testing, databases, etc.
o Playing a direct role in counseling a designated set of students and alumni in career planning skills and job search strategies in each law school class.
  • Preparing statistical reports for internal (the Dean) and external constituencies (ABA, US News, etc).

Supervisory Relationships:
This position supervises and directs the work of three Senior Career Advisors, a Recruiting Manager, and a part-time Administrative Assistant. The position reports directly to the Dean.

Qualifications:
  • A graduate or professional degree is required. A J.D. is preferred.
  • Legal training is preferred.
  • Experience in law school career services or legal recruiting is required.
  • Experience at a law school career office is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership, management, and collaboration skills are required.
  • Strong understanding of legal education trends and the career services landscape is necessary.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with prospective students, families, faculty and stakeholders are essential.
  • Data analysis and reporting capabilities to evaluate strategies are necessary.
