What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sander position at Vanguard Furniture Co Inc?
Position Summary: Sand, smooth whitewood using sandpaper to erase all roughness to prepare for finishing process or between finish coats.
Position Responsibilities:
Read tickets and/or job notes prior to sanding to verify options.
Transports frames from work station to holding area.
Inspect frame for areas that need repair.
Feel surface of sanded frame for smoothness.
Scrape frame with chisel or scraper to remove burrs, splinters, and excess glue.
Fix minor defects in unit with putty and putty knife; such as cracks and imperfections in the unit.
Sands the case with orbital sander and sanding block all over, following the proper procedures, softening edges, sanding shapes etc.
Make sure there are no defects in the unit before sending to finishing line.
Prepare surface for further finishing
Blow off frame with air hose.
Remove frame from table and push to Finishing Department.
Maintains neat and orderly work station.
Wears required safety glasses and foot wear; works safely and reports unsafe conditions to Dept. Supervisor.
Performs daily stretching exercises.
Performs other duties as required by supervisor.
Essential Skills and Experience:
Must have ability to learn quickly and recognize parts.
Understand correct placement of parts, right / left sides, front / back.
English required for reading tickets and instructions.
Valued but not Required Skills and Experience:
Previous knowledge of furniture sanding.
Physical demands and work environment:
Lift / Carry: Frequently lifting less than 20 lbs.; occasionally lifting in excess of 50 lbs.; team lift greater weights. Must be able to lift onto and remove frame from work table.
Stand/Bend/Stoop/Kneel/Crouch: Must be able to stand 8 hours, repeatedly bend, lift, stoop, kneel or crouch while sanding and push raw frames.
Push / Pull: Occasionally push/pull and manipulate piece for sanding. Must push frame to holding area.
Reach / Handle / Grasp: Repetitive use of hands required. Must be able to use hand and reach all areas of frame placed on workstation.
Climbing: Must be able to climb up/down ladders between 2 – 8 feet tall using 3-point contact method to reach various heights requiring sanding or finishing or to clean booth and change out filters.
Tool Usage: Required to use sandpaper and steel wool.
