CLAIMS MANAGER

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

As the Company’s claims manager, you will be responsible for managing the claims process within Vanguard. You will oversee the claims process, including but not limited to receiving / acknowledging claims, timely reporting claims to cargo underwriters, collaborating with internal teams to investigate the validity of claims and pursuing / negotiating a timely and effective resolution to claims. You will be responsible for pursuing downstream recovery for claims Vanguard has become subrogated to by virtue of any payment made, in all situations where Vanguard is not primarily liable for the loss or damage. All claims handled MUST be tracked and documented. Additionally, your role will involve risk assessment and the development of risk-management strategies to reduce the likelihood of future losses occurring within the Vanguard network.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE :

  • Serve as the primary touch point for the receipt of claims made against Vanguard Logistics for Cargo Loss and Damage. This includes prompt acknowledgement, documentation and reporting of claim above the applicable insurance deductible to Vanguard’s cargo underwriters.
  • Serve as relationship manager with Cargo underwriter’s representative.
  • Work to timely and accurately resolve claims, providing timely status updates to claimants.
  • Manage settlements and reserves within approved limits and escalate cases beyond your authority with recommendations to your supervisor.
  • Ensure claims payments are made promptly and accurately either by Vanguard and / or its underwriters.
  • Maintain a record of all current and historical claims with proper documentation of status / result.
  • Provide guidance to reporting staff on managing claims inquiries from customers.
  • Facilitate communication among the insured, broker, and claimant when required.
  • Set cargo claim reserves and provide recommendations or reports for senior management.
  • Oversee claims staff performance (if any), including talent selection, development, and performance management, while providing coaching and support.
  • Provide support to operational staff on all General Average and Salvage Lien situations.
  • Pursue subrogation recoveries in all situations where subrogation is available.
  • Analysis of claims data to develop risk mitigation / management strategies for the Company.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS :

  • Strong attention to detail and critical thinking abilities, with a knack for problem-solving and applying logical reasoning to offer effective solutions for customers and business partners.
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills, ensuring clear and concise exchanges.
  • Ability to identify, prioritize, and act with a sense of urgency.
  • Ability to negotiate and to stand firm in the face of adversity or disagreement.
  • Exceptional customer service skills, adept at facilitating conflict resolution and maintaining positive relationships.
  • Understanding of Marine / Maritime / Admiralty claims.
  • Technical aptitude, combined with project management expertise.
  • Education : Bachelor’s degree or equivalent field-related experience.
  • Experience : 3-5 years of claims management experience.
