JOB DESCRIPTION:
This position makes, alters, and repairs military uniforms/clothing to include military field gears, and or equipment components, i.e., field packs, duffle bags, and laundry bags to conform to applicable Army Regulations. The repairs and alterations work also involves working closely with the customers to find out what needs to be fixed or changed.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Demonstrates a broad knowledge and practical techniques when taking measurements and making patterns and layouts, mark, cut, fit, and sew or cement parts together, using hand or power tools and equipment.
- Inspect, repair, modify and alter variety of military clothing, ACU, DCU, BDU, Class A outer garments, and flight clothing.
- Perform operator’s maintenance on all sewing equipment in accordance with the appropriate technical manual (TM).
- Operate and use the program/menu and troubleshooting procedures on the digital embroideries machine and the computer menu system.
- Manufacture and/or sew on name, U.S. Army tapes, insignias and patches.
- Perform repair on field equipment, such as back packs, duffle bags, webbings, sleeping bags, and field clothing.
- Performed repairs on various flags and banners.
- Prepare DA Form 2404, DA Form 2407 and DA Form 2407-1.
- Maintain bench stock adequate for efficient operation and effectively accomplish mission.
- Sew or repair buttonholes.
- Repair or replace defective garment parts such as pockets, zippers, snaps, buttons, and linings.
- Estimate how much a garment style changes, such as tapering pant legs, narrowing lapels, and adding or removing padding.
- Measure customers, using tape measures, and record measurements.
- Trim excess material, using scissors.
- Press garments, using hand irons or pressing machines.
- Maintain garment drape and proportions as alterations are performed.
- Examine tags on garments to determine alterations needed.
- Let out and take in seams in suits and other garments to improve fit.
- Take up or let down hems to shorten or lengthen garment parts such as sleeves.
- Fit and study garments on customers to determine required alterations.
- Remove stitches from garments to be altered, using rippers or razor blades.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Must have 2 years hands-on experience and excellent understanding of basic sewing and tailoring procedures.
- Ability to understand oral and written instructions to perform basic sewing and tailoring work.
- This is a civilian position and doesn't require enlistment.
