Job Title: Fire Apparatus Technician/EVT - Heavy Equipment Mechanic
Location: Fort Gregg-Adams, VA
Rate of Pay: $42.70
Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor
Position Summary
The Fire Apparatus Technician/EVT - Heavy Equipment Mechanic diagnosis servicing and repairing major assemblies and sub-assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks, and material handling equipment (MHE), construction equipment, fire engines, ladder trucks and tractors.
Signing Bonus will be paid 30 days from date of hire.
Functions
· Repairs and overhauls automobiles, buses, fire trucks, and other automotive vehicles.
· Examines heavy equipment and discusses with customer or Equipment Inspector the nature and extent of damage or malfunction.
· Plans work procedure, using charts, technical manuals, and experience.
· Raises vehicle, using hydraulic jack or hoist, to gain access to mechanical units bolted to
underside of vehicle. Inspects, services, and replaces major assemblies, such as engines,
transmissions, or differentials, using mechanics tools and shop equipment.
· Disassembles, assemblies and inspects parts for wear, using micrometers, calipers, and
thickness gauges.
· Repairs or replaces parts, such as pistons, rods, gears, hydraulic cylinders, valves, and
bearings, using mechanic's hand tools.
· Inspects, services, and replaces carburetors, fuel injectors, blowers, generators, distributors, starters, and pumps. Inspects, services, and replaces suspension and steering components.
· Inspects, services, and replaces vehicle electrical circuits and components. Inspects, adjusts, services, and replaces hydraulic, air over hydraulic, and air braking systems.
· Inspects, services, and replaces cooling system components.
· Inspects, services, and replaces vehicle exhaust systems.
· Mends damaged body and fenders by hammering out or filling in dents and welding broken parts.
· Installs and repairs accessories, such as radios, heaters, mirrors, and lights.
· Performs scheduled preventive maintenance services in accordance with specific equipment service manuals.
· Research repair parts as needed to complete repairs.
· Annotates work performed on the work order and submits completed work packet to the Production Control Office.
General Requirements
· Knowledge of standard tools, equipment, and material.
· Knowledge of proper use and procedures to manage hazardous materials and hazardous waste products.
· Provide personal common hand-tools such as screwdrivers, pliers, sockets, and wrenches to support daily operations.
· Must possess an extensive knowledge of automotive / heavy truck maintenance, construction,
equipment maintenance, and MHE maintenance.
· Ability to read, comprehend and explain instructions, technical data, schematics, diagrams,
(electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic), and parts manuals from various technical sources.
· Ability to organize work, diagnose and solve problems, establish, and manage priorities,
collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions based on facts.
· Must be capable of lifting 50 pounds and work occasionally outside.
· Ensures that all tasks are preformed safely; wears safety items of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) e.g. gloves, safety shoes, protective eyewear, hearing protection, and other items such as aprons or outerwear as appropriate.
· Employee is required to maintain a valid state-issued Driver’s license and applicable Government/Army license.
· Conform with and abide by all regulations, policies, work procedures, and instructions.
· Perform other duties as required to support the mission and contractual requirements.
Fire Apparatus Technician Requirements: Must have the following qualifications:
· Level I
o F1 Maintenance, Inspection, and Testing of Fire Apparatus
o F2 Design & Performance Standards of Fire Apparatus
· ASE Exams
o T4 Truck, Brakes
o T5 Truck, Suspension and Steering
· Level II
o F3 Fire Pumps & Accessories
o F4 Fire Apparatus Electrical Systems
· ASE Exams
o T2 Truck, Diesel Engines
o T3 Truck, Drive Train
o T6 Truck, Electrical Systems
Education and Citizenship Requirements
· Required: US nationality/citizenship and residence, with verbal and written fluency in English.
· A minimum of 2 years of experience in heavy equipment/EVT maintenance.
· Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
· Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
