Job Summary: The Category Manager – Subcontracting (Outsourced Manufacturing) is responsible for managing the procurement activities across external vendors providing surface treatment (anodizing, coating) and fabrication services. This position is a key member of the central Procurement team. The individual holding this position will report into the VP Procurement, and will work closely with internal stakeholders (e.g. supply chain, operations, finance, sales, etc.) and the different Business Unit and Plant Procurement teams.
This is a global role for the Subcontracting category, working across Business Units (Extrusion Europe, Extrusion North America, Precision Tubing and Building Systems) with initial focus on North America. This position is based at any of plants across North America, offering a flexible hybrid working arrangement.
Ideal Candidate: This is not a buyer position. Looking for someone with experience in outsourced manufacturing (fabrication, etc.) someone that has a plan with supplier and are engaged. Must have an analytical mindset. The ideal candidate would have a strong change management background. Travel up to 30%
Required Education/Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree required. Preferred focus: Supply Chain, Finance, Engineering, related field.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience, although prefer 10 years, working in procurement, strategic sourcing, category management, supply chain, plant operations, or related fields.
- Experience with subcontracting (outsourced manufacturing) categories.
- Experience developing a strategic approach to spend categories or supply base.
- Ability to travel up to 30% as required.
Preferred Skills/Qualifications:
- Highly proficient in Microsoft Office and video conferencing tools
- Experience with Should-Cost Modeling, Total Cost of Ownership, and ROI analysis preferred
- Excellent analytical skills, ability to create and manage complex spreadsheets
- Experience with business operating systems, i.e.: Oracle, SAP, preferred
- CPSM/CPSD/C.P.M. certification(s) preferred
Job Responsibilities:
Category strategy development and implementation
- Define category strategies based on analysis of the internal and external fact base, utilizing supply market intelligence, vendor knowledge, and sound procurement strategies.
- Lead procurement category deployment and supplier management for subcontracting category in order to support business strategy and minimize total cost of ownership (TCO).
- Prioritize internal production capacity (Make) before considering external suppliers (Buy), ensuring plants are fully utilized where feasible and outsourcing is only pursued when necessary.
- Work closely with stakeholders (e.g. procurement, supply chain, operations, finance, sales and other senior leadership) to develop effective cost-reduction strategies and execution plans, while ensuring vendors meet all requirements for capacity, continuity of supply, service levels, and Health, Safety & Environmental considerations.
Manage supplier relationships
- Lead strategic sourcing events to establish a competitive sourcing environment for subcontracting.
- Conduct fact-based negotiations (building on supplier and industry analysis, benchmarks, cost structure analysis) with strategic vendors and establish long term agreements to implement the defined strategic plan.
- Establish multi-year contractual agreements with strong commercial and legal agreement terms.
- Drive long term supplier performance through development and implementation of Quarterly Business Reviews (QBRs), Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and development of Performance Improvement Plans for any under-performing vendors.
- Develop tools to support plant procurement team negotiations with local subcontracting vendors.
Identify opportunities to reduce TCO
- Act as a leader in managing the total cost of ownership (TCO) within the category and, together with all the relevant stakeholders, identify, develop and lead specification, demand and process improvement initiatives.
- Continuously evaluate internal production versus external sourcing opportunities (Make vs Buy) to ensure optimal cost and capacity alignment within the category, driving internal efficiencies before outsourcing.
- Measure and track performance of the spend category under your management.
