CAMPBELL COUNTY SCHOOLS COMPUTER TECHNICIAN – TIER I
General Definition of Work:
Performs intermediate technical work serving as technology liaison as required. Work is performed under general supervision.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
Coordinating computer services and information systems; providing guidance, assistance and training to computer operators; developing and implementing data processing programs.

- Troubleshoots, repairs and maintains computer systems.
- Maintains and upgrades hardware and software of computers.
- Searches for and removes malicious software (malware) such as viruses, worms, trojans, spyware, toolbars, rootkits, etc. Attempts data recovery locally or from network backups in the event of data loss.
- Installs and ensures that software, operating systems and programs are current with patches and updates as necessary.
- Performs basic troubleshooting of network printers and wiring.
- Performs basic troubleshooting of problems with different network tasks.
- Maintains current knowledge of software and hardware used by the school system.
- Maintains records of repairs, parts and other necessary records.
- Shares responsibility in maintaining accurate records of end user equipment in inventory database.
- Assists with SOL online activities.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
General knowledge of the operation, uses and capabilities of computer equipment; thorough knowledge of methods and techniques used to maintain and repair computer equipment; some knowledge of network configuration and operation; thorough knowledge of the hazards of the work and of necessary safety precautions; ability to understand and carry out written and oral instructions; ability to read and understand maintenance manuals and to work from sketches, drawings and diagrams; skill in the use of computer equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with technology staff and school division personnel.
Education and Experience:
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in Information Technology or at least 2 years of work experience as a computer technician or field engineer. CompTIA A or comparable certification recommended.
Physical Requirements:
This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects, and some medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; work requires kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, and repetitive motions; tasks may require the use of a ladder or lift equipment; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, and determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work; the worker is subject to inside environmental conditions.
Special Requirements:
Possession of a driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
