What are the responsibilities and job description for the ParaProfessional position at Varnum Brook Elementary School?
Definition: Paraprofessionals generally support students in PreK-4 Inclusion programs, middle school (Grades 5-
8) co-taught programs, the high school inclusion program and the high school co-taught program. Includes
working in schools/programs with students in PreK-4 Inclusion Program. Paraprofessionals do not generally have
child specific assignments, but rather are assigned to a classroom or classrooms.
Essential Functions: The essential functions or duties listed below are intended only as an illustration of the various
types of work that may be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the position if
the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to the position.
? General support of a classroom or classrooms
? Provide academic support and carry over of the lessons the teacher and Special Education Teacher has
developed
? Provide all accommodations delineated within a student’s designated IEP/504
? Implement modifications that have been developed by the classroom teacher and/or Special Education
Teacher
? Develop materials based on specific instruction from the classroom teacher and/or Special Education
Teacher
? Create opportunities and instructs students to be independent in a variety of settings across their school
day
? Provide carry over of instructional practices developed by related service providers (speech, OT, PT,
Psychologist)
? Potentially assigned to multiple/different classroom grade levels or teams
? Ability to implement behavioral/social support plans within the classroom to individual students or group
of students (including but not limited to attending, non-compliance, completion of tasks, following rules
and classroom expectations)
? Provide small or whole group instruction within the classroom
? Regular education and special education students will be supported
? Engage individual and small groups of learners in instructional activities
? Follow prescribed criteria for providing and/or fading student support
? Share relevant information about learners with teachers and other school personnel as needed to facilitate
problem solving, decision-making, and program planning
? Support students to access a variety of technology
? Complete all required documentation related to incidents, accidents, discipline, assault, etc.
? Complete data collection related to academic functioning/student performance that supports instruction
? Facilitate positive relationships and engagements with peers
? Support students with organization of materials, assignments and schedules
? May be required to assist student taking notes or scribing
? Based on the student population and census in the buildings, may be assigned to different buildings
? Ensure that all accommodations outlined in the DCAP (District Curriculum Accommodation Plan) are
implemented based on student needs
? Assist in the development of portfolios for MCAS when appropriate
? Assist in the facilitation of MCAS based on accommodations
? Support students during their specials, lunch and recess times
? Facilitate and support arrival and dismissal times
? Maintain student confidentiality
? Carry out other relative assignments designated by the Principal
Required Skills, Experience and Competencies:
? High school degree or equivalent
