JOB TITLE: GEAR UP Tutor
PROGRAM: GEAR UP Program
STATUS: Part-Time (Non-Exempt)
REPORTS TO: GEAR UP Coordinator
Organization Overview
Vaughn Next Century Learning Center (“Vaughn”), located in Pacoima, is a large urban public school within the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD). Since the early 1970s, low student achievement had been a pattern. In 1993, tired of being helpless and hopeless, Vaughn became the first conversion charter school in the nation and was authorized by LAUSD. The charter was renewed most recently in 2018. Vaughn has over 25 years of experience as a successful independent charter school serving the district’s low-income students. This previously failing elementary public school is now a full-service, community-based, K-12th charter school that assures all students are college/career ready, digitally literate, and globally competent. Vaughn operates five contiguous campuses under one charter.
Responsibilities and Duties:
Program Implementation:
- Provide one on one and/or small group academic tutoring, in class room or after school, depending on school site
- Maintain a professional relationship with teachers, administration, students, parents, and community members
- Keep constant communication with teachers, school site staff, and GEAR UP staff
- Supervise all participants to ensure a safe learning environment and organized program
- Work collaboratively with teachers in the implementation of lesson plans
- Assist with academic advising and college related events and presentations
- Adhere to workplace safety guidelines
- Attend required staff meetings, trainings and events on and offsite
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Some evenings and/or weekends may be required
Data Management and Monitoring:
- Must maintain accurate daily attendance records
- Log and track academic tutoring data
- Support in the collection of student and parents/caregivers/families program information and documentation in accordance to program requirements
- Review, verify and utilize data to ensure that program goals and benchmarks are met while problem solving with lead staff to overcome challenges
- Collaborate in the completion of reports as required
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma, General Education Diploma (GED) or equivalent education required.
- Currently enrolled or recent college graduate, with a completion of freshman English, college math (Algebra II) and/or equivalent math credits preferred
- Experience with school-age children and/or in a school-based setting
- Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred
Desired Skills/Qualifications
- Strong ELA and/or Math skills
- Understanding of public-school transition to Common Core Standards
- One year paid or volunteer experience in tutoring/mentoring environment, preferably with middle school or high school students
- Must have effective communication skills and demonstrated leadership experience
- Proven ability to assist students with academic assignments
- Ability to interface and interact with all levels of staff (administrators, teachers, parents, and students)
- Ability to plan and implement lesson plans, as needed
- Self-motivated, responsible, and professional attitude at all times
- Must have access to reliable transportation to arrive to work site at scheduled time consistently
Compensation and Benefits
- $22.00/hr
- Sick Time Accrual
Additional Information
Upon receiving an offer of employment:
- Must pass a criminal background check (Live Scan) with the Department of Justice (DOJ)
- Must provide a Tuberculosis skin test (Mantoux) clearance within 60 days of employment
- Will be assigned mandated state training to be completed prior to the first day of employment
