Patient Care Coordinator- Advanced Education General Dentistry

Chief Purpose of the Position
The Patient Care Coordinator will be part of VCU Dental Care’s Advanced Education General Dentistry Department. The incumbent is largely responsible for the ideal patient experience, collection, schedule management, and appointment coordination.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to

  • Create patient records: Ensure that new patient paperwork is properly completed, compile paperwork into new charts, both electronic and hard-copy.
  • Collecting payments follow up on patient pre-authorizations.
  • Checking schedules proactively and contacting patients prior to appointments regarding co-pays associated with upcoming procedures.
  • Act as a support and liaison for patients, residents, faculty, students, and co-workers of VCU Dental Care and VCU School of Dentistry.
  • Performing patient access and registration duties, financial consultation for patients, and insurance verification.
  • Communicate with patients via telephone, mail, and face-to-face opportunities to ensure a full understanding of their accounts.
  • Mentor dental residents/students regarding office operations and insurance practices.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required

  • Excellent customer service skills and willingness to assist patients, students, residents, faculty, and other staff.
  • Experience and working knowledge of dental terminology are strongly preferred.
  • Superior telephone etiquette skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Working knowledge of Windows-based computers and data entry skills.
  • Ability to work independently as well as with a team.
  • The ability to work efficiently and accurately in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to maintain multiple objectives simultaneously.
  • Ability to understand and explain patient account financial ledgers.
  • Must be flexible to work schedules for varying shifts.

Education level and experience required

  • High School graduate or equivalent required.
  • 3 years of customer service experience
  • 1 years of experience in the health field. Dental background strongly preferred.
  • 1 years of accounts receivable and/or insurance coordination experience is preferred.
  • Experience in dental software, preferably axiUm strongly preferred.
  • Computer skills required, with proficiency in Microsoft Windows & Office, especially Word and Excel.

Hiring Range: Commensurate with experience
