What are the responsibilities and job description for the Sonographer III- AOP/OBGYN position at VCU Health System?
The Sonographer job performs the practice of ultrasonography and is responsible for the administration of high-frequency sound waves and other diagnostic techniques to humans of all ages (newborn to geriatric) for medical purposes. A Sonographer/Technologist performs ultrasonography procedures and related techniques, producing images at the request of and for interpretation by a licensed independent practitioner.

Ensures the Ultrasound Probe cleaning logs are completed daily.
Advanced Competencies
Capable of inventorying, ordering, and tracking unit supplies. This includes utilizing any 3rd inventory management tools designed for your area.
Co-lead continuing education lectures.
Knowledge and Competency
Highly experienced. Proficient in modality advanced competencies.
Thorough knowledge of technical standards, the scope of practice, department and health system policies, and safety and service standards.
Participates in the development of modality policy, procedures, and workflows.
Thorough understanding of imaging equipment, image processing software, instrumentation, and ancillary patient care equipment.
Education, Certification & Experience
The position requires certification by the American Registry of Radiology Technologists (ARRT) as a sonographer ARRT(S) or RDMS or CCI certification in medical sonography or RDCS certification in cardiac sonography or RVT certification as a Vascular Technologist, and BLS for Healthcare Providers, and a bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience.
In lieu of the bachelor’s degree, the candidate can use either of the following to satisfy the educational requirement:
Option 1: 1 relevant Advanced Registry to include but not limited to, Pediatrics, MSK, Vascular, Abdomen, Breast, Peds Cardiac, Fetal Echo, or OBGYN.
*Total of 2 registries: 1 entry-level and 1 advanced*
4 years of relevant work experience required
- Option 2: 6 years of relevant work experience
(The advanced registry is in addition to the entry-level registry and cannot be used to satisfy entry-level and advanced registry requirements. For example, a vascular technologist cannot count RVT as entry-level and advanced. If RVT is used as entry-level, an additional ARDMS, ARRT, or CCI registry is needed to satisfy the advanced registry requirement.)
Team members who reached Clin III status prior to 7.1.2023 are exempt from this educational requirement.
