Assistant Clinical Manager - Urology Clinic

Adult Outpatient Pavilion, 11th Floor

Hours : Monday-Friday, 8 : 00 AM - 4 : 30 PM (with late days until 5 : 00 PM)

The Urology Clinic at VCU Health System is seeking a dynamic and experienced Assistant Clinical Manager to join our team. This role is pivotal in coordinating patient care and ensuring smooth clinical operations for adult patients with a variety of urologic conditions, including cancer cases (bladder, kidney, prostate), mobility issues, and other urologic diseases. As an Assistant Clinical Manager, you will work closely with clinical leadership to optimize care delivery, maintain efficient workflows, and foster a supportive and collaborative environment among staff.

This role is located at the Adult Outpatient Pavilion Downtown

Hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-4 : 30pm (with late days until 5pm)

Key Responsibilities :

  • Patient Care Coordination : Oversee patient flow, ensuring timely and effective care delivery in a fast-paced clinical environment. Actively participate in patient visits, including procedures such as catheter exchanges (urethral and suprapubic), PTNS, void trials, cystoscopies, and vasectomies.
  • Staff Leadership : Supervise and support a team of Registered Nurses (RNs), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs), Clinical Medical Assistants (CMAs), and Patient Care Technicians (PCTs). Foster teamwork and ensure that staff have the resources and training needed to provide exceptional care.
  • Operational Oversight : Manage day-to-day clinical operations, including staffing, supply chain management, and clinic organization. Monitor and maintain efficient workflows, ensuring smooth patient transitions through the clinic.
  • Collaboration and Communication : Serve as a key resource and liaison between staff, providers, administration, and other disciplines. Collaborate with clinic leadership to ensure the clinic operates in alignment with VCU Health System's mission and Magnet Hospital standards.
  • Quality Improvement & Patient Engagement : Promote a culture of excellence in patient care. Actively support the continuous optimization of nursing practices, fostering patient satisfaction, engagement, and trust.
  • Performance Management : Assist with team member development, providing feedback, guidance, and support. Participate in team-building and staff engagement initiatives to enhance workplace morale and performance.
  • Administrative Support : Assist with various administrative tasks related to the clinic's operations, including scheduling, patient documentation, and reporting.

Required Qualifications :

  • Bachelor's Degree in Nursing (BSN)
  • Active RN license in the state of Virginia
  • Minimum of 3 years of nursing experience in a clinical setting, preferably in urology or a related field
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with a focus on communication, collaboration, and problem-solving
  • Experience in managing clinical workflows, patient care coordination, and staff supervision
  • Ability to prioritize and manage high-volume patient visits in a fast-paced environment
  • Demonstrated commitment to patient-centered care, continuous improvement, and quality outcomes

  • Maintains all records pertaining to the staff competency and quality audits and other related records Collaborate with leadership to review and advise clinic fiscal needs.

  • The Assistant Clinical Manager reinforces, and role models a holistic approach in preserving a therapeutic nurse / patient relationship throughout the health care continuum as evidenced by :
  • Assists in the adaptation of communication styles and techniques based on individual patient and or family needs.
  • Communicates with patients to resolve questions or concerns and role modeling appropriate responses to patient / family concerns.
  • Identifies potential safety hazards and using BEEP tools to resolve.
  • When necessary, escalates safety incidents. De-escalates behaviors that can create potential safety concerns and escalating to the appropriate level.
  • Participate in appropriate analysis, follow-up, and prevention of further safety events. Empowers staff to assist patients throughout the health care continuum, gain sense of control and participate in their recovery.
  • Promotes a climate of holistic, non-judgmental care, relationship-based care.
  • Anticipates variables affecting patient comfort by observing for verbal or nonverbal behaviors that indicate patient and visitor discomfort, pain, distress or dissatisfaction.
  • Role models how to promote positive patient outcomes by advocating for patients through adapting and challenging current systems.

  • Coordinates with Nurse Clinician and Clinical Manager to ensure educational requirements and clinical competencies are maintained for clinical staff.

  • Focuses on the overall needs of the clinic and assesses patient / staff in need of assistance.
  • Manages the flow of the clinic for consistency and efficiency of care and assisting with the prioritization of activities for patients on the unit.
  • Takes a proactive role in implementing multidisciplinary coordination of care for specific patient population.
  • Coordinates a safe and timely direct admission / discharge process to optimize clinic capacity.
  • Takes appropriate actions to enhance positive outcomes, even in the most challenging situations.
  • Promotes high-level, cost-effective care in clinic through team assignments, by assessing adequacy of resources for patient care, anticipating staffing needs and going into staffing when needed. (up to 80%)

  • The Assistant Clinical Manager collaborates on and demonstrates professionalism, and understanding for peers and other clinical disciplines and participates as an effective member of the patient care team to formulate an integrated approach to care as evidenced by :

    Employment Qualifications

    Required Education :

    Bachelor's Degree from a professional nursing program recognized and or approved by the corresponding Board of Nursing.

    Preferred Education : N / A

    Licensure / Certification Required :

    Current RN licensure in Virginia or eligible compact state

    Licensure / Certification Preferred :

    Certification in specialty area.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Years and Type of Required :

    Experience Minimum of three (3) years of clinical experience with at least one year as an RN.

    Clinical experience can include CMA, LPN athletic trainer or other technical clinical positions

    Charge Nurse or supervisory experience preferred or demonstrated leadership skills in previous roles
