The Gross Room/Autopsy Technician provides support services to Anatomic Pathology by serving as a Gross Room Assistant and Autopsy Assistant. The Gross Room/Autopsy Technician performs specific tasks and duties under the direction and supervision of Pathologists or Pathologists’ Assistants.
The Gross Room/Autopsy Technician assists the supervisor in training, scheduling and assigning duties appropriate to each Pathology Tech and The Gross Room/Autopsy Technician shows initiative and good judgment by identifying and solving problems to reach quality decisions in leading the staff in their primary area of responsibility. This position assists in the preparation and performance of human surgical specimen dissection. This role provides service in the Autopsy Suite to include but not limited to autopsy dissection, maintaining supply inventory, housekeeping maintenance, enforcement of safety regulations and other designated duties as assigned. This role performs morgue duties, including releasing remains from the morgue and administrative activities, in a limited, backup capacity.
The Gross Room/Autopsy Technician maintains procedure manuals, monitors inventory, and maintains assigned logs.

Experience REQUIRED
Previous laboratory work experience or experience with biohazard procedures and precautions
Experience PREFERRED
Previous work experience in a pathology laboratory or autopsy service
Education/training REQUIRED
Minimum of an Associate’s Degree in Biology, Chemistry, or other laboratory science, obtained from an accredited institution
Education/training PREFERRED
Bachelor’s Degree in Science from an accredited program
Training in mortuary science
Training in Anatomic Pathology
Independent Action(s) Required
Adheres to all policies and procedure, especially safety and patient confidentiality regulations.
Performs data entry in Laboratory Information System.
Performs autopsy techniques.

Alternate some autopsy responsibilities monthly with fellow AP Gross Room Assistant and Pathologists’ Assistants.
