Core Responsibilities
Transition programming (50%): Oversee the logistics, operations, and execution of transition programming.
- Serve as the contact for New Student Convocation and facilitate the associated planning meetings for the event.
- Coordinate transition events for students including New Student Convocation, Summer Send-Offs, Welcome events and Weeks of Welcome programming.
- Collaborate with campus partners and serve on university wide committees to support transition programming within the first six weeks of the semester.
- Research current trends in transition and retention programming to develop and create innovative programming that supports student success initiatives.
- Development of new transition initiatives and a peer leader program that support the mission and vision of the office and the division.
- Assist in planning the overall orientation experience for new students and their families and supporters by collaborating with campus partners to create engaging and innovative student programming that aligns with university and division goals.
- Serve in an on-call rotation for overnight programming and events or trips related to orientation and transition programming.
- Support the recruitment and selection process for new and returning orientation leaders, Senior Orientation Leaders, and graduate student staff.
- Assist in developing content for web, social media and other office communications and platforms related to orientation and transition programming in collaboration with the SEMSS Student Communications team.
- Serve as a secondary Social Media Administrator for the office, assist with the office’s social media accounts, and ensure adherence to relevant policies and brand standards with the support of a student intern.
- Serve as the contact for the Ram Ready Orientation Modules through Advantage Design Group software.
- Update pre-orientation content within the modules by collaborating with campus partners to ensure information is accurate and engaging.
- Oversee completion of trainings required by state and/or federal law for new students in coordination with those who oversee the respective content to support accurate reporting and maintain compliance.
- Assist with the preparation of various reports based on assessments of orientation and transition programming.
- This position is eligible for a hybrid work schedule with 40% virtual.
- This position does require some evenings and weekend work in support of peer leader training, enrollment and yield events, and orientation and transition programs.

Minimum Hiring Standards
- Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- At least one year of experience in higher education. Graduate Assistant experience may be considered.
- Knowledge of student development theory, student identity development theory and leadership theory.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills and professional judgment and demeanor.
- Ability to stay focused, be efficient, overcome obstacles, and manage multiple priorities to achieve deadlines.
- Ability to use logic and reasoning to identify solutions to problems.
- Ability to work independently.
- Demonstrated experience working in and fostering an environment of respect, professionalism and civility with a population of faculty, staff, and students from various backgrounds and experiences, or a commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.
- Master’s degree in higher education, student affairs, counseling or other related field.
- Professional experience in a functional area(s) that support the transition and retention of diverse students and families (e.g. Orientation and Transition Programs, First-Year Experience, Access and Opportunity Programs, Multicultural Affairs, Residence Life, Student Activities, Academic Advising, Leadership Development, etc.).
- Demonstrated knowledge and experience supporting first-generation and/or historically underserved students and families.
- Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, training, and supervision to student employees.
- Previous experience planning, implementing and assessing large-scale university programs.
- Experience with orientation or event registration systems.
