OVERVIEW:
To oversee the daily operation of vehicle maintenance facility; to assign work activities to assigned personnel; to ensure quality maintenance and availability of district vehicles in safe operating condition.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- High School education or equivalent; ASE certified preferred
- Valid, or ability to obtain, Arizona CDL class A driver’s license and vehicle emissions license
- Five years mechanical with minimum three years diesel experience
- Skills and experience of journeyman mechanic; proficient in diagnostic testing equipment of automotive and maintenance shops
- Significant supervisory experience required with proven ability to work with and to lead others
- Ability to work outside in either heat or cold; to lift and/or move 75 pounds
- Ability to operate vehicle maintenance repair facility equipment (i.e. brake drum lathe, Sun Diagnostic)
- Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written) and to establish and to maintain effective and cooperative working relationships
- Ability to work overtime and to change schedules with minimal notice; willingness to work non-regular hours (weekends, night shift, swing shift, holidays)
- Willingness to pursue educational goals to maintain basic job skills
- Working knowledge of computer usage to generate work orders
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Supervise the work activities of assigned personnel and the daily operation of assigned facility
- Assign work activities of assigned personnel; monitor progress and check completed jobs to ensure quality maintenance
- Receive discrepancy reports, log repairs and generate shop work orders on computerized system
- Schedule work assignments to utilize efficient and effective use of assigned personnel, vehicles and facilities
- Perform essential duties required of Heavy Duty Mechanic J
- Inspect, diagnose and make minor repairs on district vehicles (i.e. buses, automobiles, vans and trucks)
- Lubricate, adjust and service equipment
- Estimate time and cost repairs to equipment
- Check buses for safety conformance and compliance
- Ensure shop area is maintained and free from hazards and safe work practices as followed
- Regular and on-time attendance required
- Perform required paperwork and record keeping in a timely, neat and legible manner
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- Make service calls for emergency repairs and operate light and heavy duty towing equipment for vehicle recovery
- Assist other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities

Prior to employment or during the first 3 months of new hire probationary period, drug and alcohol testing shall be required of all new contract employees who work in Transportation. Any applicants having a confirmed positive test shall not be eligible for employment.
