Essential Duties and Responsibilities The Immigration Law Unit handles a variety of immigration cases, including deportation defense and detention work, and family-based and humanitarian-based immigration benefits, T and U Visas, VAWA applications, and asylum matters
- Providing direct representation to clients before the Immigration Court and USCIS.
- Preparing and delivering community education.
- Conducting outreach.
- Active bar participation.
- Special legal and community projects.
- Supervision of immigration staff attorneys and paralegals including:
- Completing staff evaluations.
- Providing regular feedback.
- Ensuring all grant requirements are met.
- Managing grants and outcome deliverables.
- Conducting regular Unit meetings and case review sessions with attorney and paralegals.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Member in good standing of the Florida Bar Association.
- A demonstrable awareness and sensitivity to the needs of the populations we serve.
- Ability to work effectively with a large caseload and function professionally within a highly stressful environment.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to work independently at times and also as an effective part of a team, including other attorneys, support staff, volunteers, and community partners.
- Excellent written and communication skills.
- Ability to work constructively with others.
- The ability to speak more than one language is a plus.
Education & Experience
- Eight years of experience in Immigration law preferred.
- Experience with supervising staff
- Experience serving low-income individuals, victims of crime, veterans, or other marginalized communities preferred but not required.
